THIS NEW COURSE IS THE ONLY ONE OF ITS KIND IN SCOTLAND. IT WILL DEVELOP YOUR PRACTICAL SKILLS AND PROVIDE YOU WITH THE THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED TO BECOME AN AUDIOLOGIST.
There are nine million people in Britain who have a significant hearing impairment. These numbers rise as the number of people over the age of 60 increases. The Royal National Institute of Deaf people (RNID) mwebsite states that 698,000 people in the United Kingdom are either severely or profoundly deaf, 123,000 people over the age of 16 years are deafened and 23,000 are deaf blind. There is a shortage of audiologists in the UK (especially in Scotland) to treat all these people, which is the reason the Scottish Executiveasked QMU to set up this course.
This course gives essential training for those wishing to qualify as audiologists. Following an honours degree in a science or relevant related subject, successful completion of the GDip in Audiology will prepare you for registration with the awarding body, the Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists. You will then work within a multidisciplinary team, identifying, assessing, and providing rehabilitation and management for people with hearing impairments and balance disorders. You will develop strong clinical skills in addition to a deep understanding of the theory of audiology. The clinical studies area is central and includes clinical skills development and block clinical placements in each year and between both years of the course. Students rotate through placements throughout the whole of Scotland. Clinical work is underpinned by modules in Clinical Audiological Studies, Communication Studies, Psychology and Biological Sciences.
The course is modular and can be studied on a full-time basis only. The MSc/PgDip leads to eligibility to register as an audiologist with the Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists (RCCP) in the UK.
The course is delivered at QMU with placements in hospitals throughout Scotland, the north of England and Northern Ireland.
