The International Relations programme offers students insight into the rapidly changing world of global politics.

The International Relations programme offers students insight into the rapidly changing world of global politics. Those politics involve fundamental questions about war and peace, but also about justice, efficiency and identity throughout the world. They involve the rise and fall, conflict and cooperation, of sovereign nation-states, but also of non-governmental actors and international and regional organisations. The Master's programme in International Relations examines such global politics. Students will learn to criticise and develop theoretical insights based on a range of scholarly traditions within political science and other social sciences. This programme also teaches students to analyse those insights through original empirical research using a variety of methodologies. In addition to the quality of its curriculum and instruction, the programme takes full advantage of its Amsterdam location, not only a diverse and lively cosmopolitan world city but also one with a long and extraordinary history in international politics, global commerce and finance, and international law.

Contents

This programme starts in September. The curriculum consists of one core course, several elective courses and a research project. Fulfilling the requirements should take one year of full-time study. Students who need to complete a deficiency programme will require more time, the amount of which will depend on the extra requirements to be fulfilled.

Thesis

The research project (30 ECTS credits) consists of:

  • a seminar
  • primary and secondary research
  • a written thesis

The final Master's thesis is a report on research carried out by the student as part of the research project. The thesis should be between 20,000 and 25,000 words long.

Degree requirements

The Master of Science in Political Science degree is awarded upon completion of 60 ECTS credits, including all required courses in the curriculum and a written Master's thesis, which is based on an independent research project.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
