International migration has become a topical issue in public, political and academic debates in Europe and elsewhere. The Migration and Ethnic Studies programme offers students insight in the different forms, causes and consequences of international migration. It gives particular attention to
This programme addresses issues of immigrant incorporation, assimilation and diversity in various social fields, including the labour market, education, politics and religion.
The programme takes an interdisciplinary approach to major contemporary concerns regarding migration, by using the perspectives from a variety of scientific disciplines. The combination of empirical studies and theoretical reflection provides the intellectual tools and skills that students need to analyse and deal with the complexities of migration in today's world.
For students interested in this field of study, we also offer a two-year Research Master’s.
The changes taking place in contemporary Amsterdam embody many of the issues that are dealt with in Migration and Ethnic Studies. Many of the programme's lecturers are researchers at the UvA's Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies (IMES), an interdisciplinary research institute which examines issues related to migration and integration from a comparative perspective.
The IMES houses a number of internationally respected scholars, whose work revolves around such issues as international mobility, political mobilization and the institutional design of multicultural democracies, public space, labor market participation and entrepeneurship, and life courses and generational change. Graduates of the Master are in an excellent position to apply to IMES's international, English-taught PhD programme.
This programme starts in September. The programme consists of several core courses (30 ECTS credits total) and an elective of 10 ECTS, preferably relevant to the topic of the thesis. The programme is concluded with a Master's thesis (20 ECTS). Fulfilling the requirements should take one year of full-time study. Students who need to complete a preparatory programme will require more time, the amount of which will depend on the extra requirements to be fulfilled.
The Master's thesis (20 ECTS) is a report on research that focuses on a topic in the field of Migration and Ethnic Studies, in which theoretical insights and the analysis of empirical data are integrated. It is carried out by the students under the supervision of two faculty members. The subject of the thesis is to be mutually agreed upon by the student and the academic adviser. The thesis should be between 16,000 and 24,000 words.
The Master of Science degree is awarded upon completion of 60 ECTS, including all required courses in the curriculum and a written Master's thesis, which is based on an independent research project.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
