This programme offers advanced training in current social science theory and innovative methodologies in a rigorous and multidisciplinary social science research environment.

Contemporary societies require flexible social scientists, who are able to generate relevant knowledge about important social and cultural issues. The Research Master's programme in Social Sciences is a two-year programme for motivated students with excellent academic records who wish to pursue a career in social science research in an academic setting or in private or governmental research institutes. The programme offers a combination of rigorous training, a wide range of courses to choose from in the first year and up to six months of independent study/fieldwork in the second year. This programme offers advanced training in current social science theory and innovative methodologies in a rigorous and multidisciplinary social science research environment. It trains students to conduct research along both empirical-analytical and interpretive lines. During their studies, students specialise in one of the following five thematic specialisations: Institutions and Inequality Health, Care and the Body International Comparative Politics Globalisation, Flows and Localities Migration and Integration.


Contents

This two-year programme starts in September. It consists of

  • 10 ECTS in required courses
  • 30 ECTS in electives from the thematic specialisation
  • 50 ECTS in the field of research methodology (including a research-oriented internship)
  • and an independent research project resulting in a manuscript or academic article, to be submitted for publication in a peer-reviewed academic journal (30 ECTS, thus totalling 120 ECTS credits).

The curriculum might be slightly changed from year to year. Fulfilment of all the requirements should take two years of full-time study.

Thesis

The Master's thesis is based on individual research by the student and will be published in the form of a manuscript for an academic article, to be submitted for publication in a peer-reviewed academic journal. The research topic is to be mutually agreed upon by the student, the supervisor and the programme director. The research proposal and the manuscript will be read by a second supervisor/co-examiner. The article should be no more than 10,000 words, including references.

Degree requirements

The MSc in Social Sciences is awarded upon completion of 120 ECTS credits, including all required courses in the curriculum and a written Master's thesis, which is based on an independent research project.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

Previous education: The Research Master's Programme in Social Sciences seeks students with an academic Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in the fields of political science, sociology, anthropology or another closely related social sciences discipline. The programme is intended for students who have an active interest in research and wish to pursue a career in research. Grade average: The programme seeks students with excellent academic records and who are able to handle heavy course loads. Study results obtained in previous education should demonstrate that a student is able to attain and maintain an excellent level, especially in the fields of social sciences and research methodology. Undergraduate studies should be completed with an overall grade average of at least a B+/A- /3.5 (American system), first class Honours degree (British system), B (ECTS system), 7.5 (Dutch system) or equivalent.

Language test: All non-native speakers of English (including Dutch students) applying to one of the English-taught programmes offered by the Graduate School of Social Sciences, are required to demonstrate proficiency in the English language. All students must be able to read textbooks, understand lectures, take part in classroom discussions and undertake written work in English. Applicants who are nationals of countries other than the United States, Australia, United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland or New Zealand are required to submit an English test score that meets specific requirements.
