The MA in History has been designed to reflect the dominant research interests of the history staff, as well as to highlight key social and cultural developments in the formation of contemporary society, and how they influenced and changed the lives and lifestyles of people. The range of modules on offer will cover major themes in the field of modern historical debate.
The History MA demands, and fosters, a different range of historical skills to those appropriate to an undergraduate level. Both as an end in itself, and as a preparation for more specialist research, it aims to facilitate independent, focused study with the support and guidance of experts in the field. The MA process allows and encourages a more self-conscious approach to historical study, prompting reflection and awareness of the problems of sources, the diversity of interpretations and models, and the wider meanings of history in the world.
For the MA in History, you will take three 30-credit modules, two 15-credit research methods modules, plus a dissertation (equivalent to four 15-credit modules). The Postgraduate Diploma requires three 30-credit modules (plus the research methods modules) and the Postgraduate Certificate requires two 30-credit modules.
Assessment is normally by coursework only. Taught modules normally require either two pieces of coursework of approximately 2-3,000 words, or one piece of coursework of 5,000-6,000 words.
