Our LLM Programmes are designed to appeal to people from a variety of backgrounds and with a variety of interests ranging from recent undergraduates who wish to acquire specialist knowledge before starting their careers to practising lawyers who seek to compliment their day to day work with further study. Such a wide range of people require programmes to have flexibility to fit into busy lives.
The School of Law was one of the first universities in the United Kingdom to offer an LLM in E-Commerce Law and has continued to be at the forefront of research activity in this area demonstrated by the School of Law hosting a two-day International Conference in 2007. Over 115 delegates from 15 countries attended the 22nd Annual BILETA Conference entitled “Paper, scissors, stone: Business, law and politics – the E and M-Commerce debate”.
This remains a very popular choice for many students as it seeks to examine the wealth of legal issues that have arisen due to the rise of the Internet and associated technologies.
If you choose to study this named pathway then you will study two compulsory modules (E-Commerce Law in Semester A and Data Protection and Cyber-Security in Semester B) as well as two options (one each semester), to give you a total of four modules of study. The LLM’s assessment strategy is ideally suited to the needs of all students being assessed exclusively by coursework.
We also provide an excellent level of pastoral and academic support for our students, including a Programme Director alongside the module tutors and also extensive research support through our research methods and skills course that runs throughout the year. Social events are organised on a regular basis.
For international students we have a dedicated International Student Support Tutor and all international students are provided with access to free English language classes throughout the academic year.
At the commencement of your studies international students are provided with a two week full-time induction week, which will ensure you are fully up to date with the dynamics of the English Legal System and provide you with the best start possible prior to commencing your studies.
Careers
The University has an extensive careers service available to all students, while the School has two academic members of staff, former solicitors, who hold regular ‘surgeries’ providing careers advice including CV writing, interview skills and suggestions for obtaining work placements during your studies at the School.

Teaching methods
Teaching takes the form of weekly lecture/workshop sessions. You are expected to come to these sessions prepared and ready to contribute to discussions. If you are studying full-time, you attend for two lectures and small group seminars per week and part-time for one lecture and small group session per week. You will be given comprehensive module guides and reading lists at the beginning of each module to enable you to read widely and research issues independently.
You are expected to approach issues of law critically and to consider law in its social, political and economic context. Each module is assessed exclusively by means of coursework and makes extensive use of our flexible, learner-centred managed online learning environment (StudyNet). Seminar tutors are specialists in their area of teaching and will be available and willing to help with any questions or concerns in the preparation for classes.
