With the development of the National Biodiversity Network and the establishment of local record centres in most counties, there is an increasing demand for training in the collection and management of biological records. This programme allows you to decide which depth of study is most appropriate, with a choice of modules allowing a degree of specialisation.
Careers
There is an excellent record of career enhancement from this programme, with a number of record centre managers securing posts after completion. It provides a sound framework for ecological consultants who wish to improve their field skills and analytical techniques.

We run this programme jointly with the Field Studies Council and the Botanical Society of the British Isles and use a range of experienced tutors based at field centres throughout the country. This programme provides the student with an opportunity to gain or improve their field skills in a range of taxonomic or habitat groups. The programme is field-based so that practical identification skills are mastered.
Learning and teaching
The course is at least 50% field-based. There is an opportunity to learn field skills as well as to apply identification and recording skills to a range of analytical recording techniques.
Assessment
All assessment is continuous using a range of techniques such as writing a research paper, presentations, collection of specimens, short essays, research posters and a synoptic class test each year.
Skills gained
At the end of the programme you should be able to demonstrate field skills in one or more taxonomic groups, be aware of the issues surrounding recording and analysis of data for that group. You will be able to computerise biological records and interpret these data using a range of techniques.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take test* A first degree in an appropriate subject or UCert Biological Recording and two years field experience.
* IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any band.
* TOEFL 580 Paper- based test / 237 Computer-based test.
