The topic of Sustainable Tropical Forestry is of global importance and the potential for trees and forests to contribute to the sustainable development in tropical and subtropical countries is increasingly recognised.

This two-year Master´s Course in Sustainable Tropical Forestry (SUTROFOR) is a world-class programme aimed at preparing qualified graduates to deal with the complex aspects of contemporary tropical forestry. The programme provides students with a firm theoretical foundation, ability to function on the international scene, openness to foreign cultures - all competencies needed for working as a researcher or in tropical forest practice, e.g. development agency, consultancy, NGO, international organisation, ministry, governmental agency, district forest office, etc.

The SUTROFOR programme provides a single entry-point access to top-level and up-to-date tropical forestry teaching. The programme is jointly developed and delivered by a connsortium of five European universities in Bangor, Copenhagen, Dresden, Montpellier and Padova. The programme consists of a year of study in one of the first three mentioned institutions, followed by a second study year at one of the four other institutions. The teaching staff is very active in research and students profit from their global expertise by having assigned a personal tutor from senior faculty members from the very start of the programme.

The SUTROFOR offers an integrated study programme with a resulting double degree that is fully recognised in all the participating countries.

Contents

The overall objective is to provide a top-level programme that qualifies graduates to deal with the huge challenges in contemporary tropical forestry. To obtain the SUTROFOR double degree and the Diploma Supplement, students have to acquire 120 ECTS by studying at two Consortium institutions (see below), acquiring at least 60 ECTS credits at each. All SUTROFOR modular activities can be completed in English, except the second year at Montpellier which is only available in French. Due to the one-year Course components, SUTROFOR encourages its student body to engage in local language studies available at all the partner institutions. Total student population is expected to be 150 (75 per year) giving a 5:1 student/faculty ratio.

The SUTROFOR Course consists of a first study year at one of three institutions (Bangor, Copenhagen, Dresden) and a second study year at one of the four other institutions. The building stones are existing masters programmes as well as research and network services. The aim of the first study year is to provide a thorough and broad introduction to sustainable tropical forestry. There is thus only one common first year programme specification - the learning outcomes are similar for the three first year institutions and will allow students to choose freely among the five specialisation options in the second year.

The first year ends with the Joint Summer Module including field work in a tropical country. Specialisation options in the second year are agroforestry systems (Bangor), socio-economics of tropical forestry (Copenhagen), tropical forest management (Dresden), environmental management and policies for tropical forests (Montpellier), or ethics in forestry and responsible trade in tropical forest products and services (Padova).

Specialisation options in the second year are:

  • Agro forestry systems (Bangor)
  • Socioeconomics of tropical forestry (LIFE)
  • Tropical forest management (Dresden)
  • Environmental management and policies for tropical forests (Montpellier)
  • Ethics in forestry and responsible trade in tropical forest products and services (Padova)

The teaching staff is very active in research, and students profit from their global expertise.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
