Introduction
Growing population densities are putting increasing pressure on scarce land resources. Adequate solutions to environmental problems such as deforestation, overgrazing, and the depletion and contamination of land and water resources depend on integrated insights and improved management. Planners, managers, policy makers and researchers need to understand the complexity of the factors involved and be able to work together with professionals from a variety of disciplines. Geo-information technology and, in particular, remote sensing, plays a central role in the search for clear analyses and viable policies. Skills in this field will therefore continue to be much in demand in industry, government and NGOs.
Why choose this programme?
Firstly, because it gives you excellent qualifications for employment at research institutes, in government, in companies, as well as in public-private partnerships. More importantly, it provides a sound theoretical and practical basis for those who wish to contribute to sustainable change.
If you have recently graduated from a university with a Bachelors degree in rural and environmental planning, geography, natural resources, agriculture, forestry, geo-information science, geology, water resources, or a related topic or are already employed in the field, this could be just the programme for you.
What will you gain?
On completion of the programme, you will have acquired the following skills:
Understanding of the scientific process and ability to undertake scientific research
Thorough awareness of European and global environmental problems and understanding of the complexity of factors involved
Understanding of geographical information management and ability to apply GIS, remote sensing and related tools
Familiarity with project and programme management
Leadership-, negotiation- and communication skills
The course is also a unique opportunity to discover Europe!
The programme is taught in four countries: the UK, Sweden, Poland and the Netherlands. While spending time in each, you will gain valuable insight into the academic, social and cultural diversity of northern Europe.
GEM MSc course - Structure
The total duration of the course is 18 months. This corresponds to 120 ECTS course credits. The course is organised in 15 modules, all linked through the common theme of geo-information and the environment. The modules are given sequentially in three of the four institutes. You start at the University of Southampton, where you stay for 17 weeks; you then move to Lund University for 19 weeks; finally you move to ITC for 42 weeks, a period that includes the modules given by the University of Warsaw and fieldwork in Poland.
All periods involve at least two institutes in team teaching, so the contribution of each institute to the entire programme is approximately one third. To increase flexibility and to allow for variation in previous knowledge and areas of interest, several elective modules are included in the course. The course is taught in English.
You are taught by staff of international repute to apply not only solid theoretical knowledge but also the latest technology and techniques to real-world case studies. The programme integrates skills from a variety of disciplines (including environmental science, remote sensing and GIS) with management and policy skills. Problem-based teaching methods challenge you to think through and solve complex issues.
In particular, the teaching is designed to develop competencies both in groups and individually that allow you to bridge the gap between knowledge and practice.
Unique opportunity to discover Europe
You will spend significant time in four North European countries (i.e. the United Kingdom, Sweden, Poland and the Netherlands). This offers you a unique opportunity to become acquainted with the academic, social and cultural diversity of Europe.
What degree will you receive?
Successful graduates are awarded a multiple MSc degree in Geo-information Science and Earth Observation with a specialisation in environmental modelling and management
Valuable insights
Non-academic agencies such as Ordnance Survey, WWF, IUCN, government planning agencies and industrial partners provide important course input through visits, guest lectures and case studies. In addition, you are offered links to existing research programmes and contacts with top researchers from the four institutes.
GEM MSc course - Modules
The 15 modules, which are built around common geo-information and environmental themes, are taught at four institutes. You start at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom, where you stay for 17 weeks; then you move to Lund University in Sweden for 19 weeks; finally you complete your study based at ITC in the Netherlands for 42 weeks. During this final period, you also study at the Institute of Geodesy and Cartography in Warsaw and carry out fieldwork in Poland.
