What is Sport and Exercise Psychology?Sport and Exercise Psychology is the scientific study of people and their behaviours in sport and exercice contexts, and the practical application of that knowledge. Sport and exercise psychology builds on the scientific fields of psychology, education, and sport and health sciences.
Programme aimThe aim of the Master's Degree Programme in Sport and Exercise Psychology is to provide high-quality research-oriented master's-level education, through English, in the multidisciplinary field of Sport and Exercise Psychology (SEP).
The programme will equip the student with the necessary knowledge and competences required to move into the academic field of sport and exercise psychology. This is done by developing students’ knowledge and skills in working with the issues of motivation, high performance, behaviour regulation, cognition, exercise counselling, and preventive interventions within the contexts of sport and exercise. The broad educational aim is to train professionals to serve individuals and communities in accordance with best professional practice.
Career opportunities There is an increasing demand for experts in the field of sport and exercise psychology. Graduates from the programme will be employed in the private and public sectors as, for example, psychological health and well-being consultants, performance enhancement consultants, or academic researchers in sport and exercise psychology.
The Master's Degree Programme in Sport and Exercise Psychology consists of 120 ECTS credits spread over two years of full-time academic study. Each student will draft an individualised study plan in co-operation with the programme director. Completing the Master´s programme requires the successful completion of all modules included in the individualised study plan.
Aside from the regular programme modules the Master´s programme also gives students the opportunity to complete a practicum period, gaining valuable experience and expertise to increase their career opportunities upon graduation. Additionally, students have the option to study abroad at one of the partner universities of the University of Jyväskylä for one semester.

Take testPrevious StudiesPrevious studies qualifying applicants for entry to the programme are a Bachelor's degree or equivalent amount of studies in
* Psychology (including Sport and Exercise Psychology, Social Psychology, Clinical Psychology) or
* Sport Sciences (such as physical education, sport administration, coaching, sport physiology) or
* Health sciences, or
* some other closely related field.
Those prospective applicants who will not receive their Bachelor’s degree until the application deadline has expired may still apply for the programme. However, they need to provide a written attestation from their institution of higher education proving that they will obtain the Bachelor's degree later in the Spring or Summer. Should their application be successful, they will be awarded a provisional acceptance into the programme, pending the receipt of the degree certificate, once graduation has taken place.
Proof of English Language ProficiencyThe language of instruction for the Master's Degree Programme in Sport and Exercise Pscyhology is English. Selected candidates must be able to demonstrate their proficiency in English at the time of the interview. In addition, applicants are asked to demonstrate their proficiency by an English language proficiency test: accepted proofs are TOEFL, IELTS, CAE and CPE. Other tests are not accepted.
The required level of English proficiency for the programme is equivalent to a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 550 (paper-based) or 79 (Internet-based). An IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0 or above is also acceptable. For CAE or CPE, test with grade C and above is acceptable.
- When filling out the TOEFL Registration Form, please fill in University Admissions Finland’s Institution Code 3138 in the Score Report Recipient field. The TOEFL test score must arrive directly from the test organiser. Score slips or their copies provided by applicants are not accepted.
- For the other tests, please address the test results to University Admissions Finland. An applicant's copy of the test score is also acceptable, as long as it is verifiable from the test organiser. Test scores sent as attachments to an e-mail message are not acceptable.
NOTE! If the results of the language test are below the required minimum, the application will not be handled.
The test is NOT required of those who have completed their previous education (Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, high school or upper secondary school) fully in English in Great Britain, Ireland, the USA, Canada, Australia or New Zealand.
Important! As there often are some delays in the process of language proficiency testing, please make sure that you apply for the language test well in advance of the application deadline so that the test can be completed and the result received in time to meet the deadline. Please take also in consideration the limited number of test dates and eventual queues for the test dates, especially around the end of the year. It is the applicant’s responsibility to make testing arrangements for her/himself.
Proven interest in the field of Sport and ExerciseProven interest in the field of sport and/or exercise may take the form of
* work experience
* research experience and/or
* voluntary work in
a sports or psychology setting. Proof should be provided in the form of testimonial or other written confirmation from a relevant professional (e.g. employer, coach) who can attest to the applicant's interest in the field of sport.
Telephone InterviewOn the basis of the application and the supporting documents, max. 40-50 applicants will be selected for a telephone interview. These applicants will be notified by the end of February 2010. Telephone interviews take place in March 2010. From the interviewed applicants, 10-15 students will be selected for the programme. Interviewed students who meet the criteria but were not among the selected students will be placed in a waiting list, and in case of a cancellation, the next best applicant will be offered a study place.
