The Joint European Master programme in Environmental Studies (JEMES) is an innovative Master Programme which is offered by four leading European universities in environmental research and education, developed as an exclusive high end programme that requires students to study in at least two of the Universities.

JEMES was selected by the European Union as an ERASMUS MUNDUS programme.

Long Description

JEMES is strongly interdisciplinary, integrating course units delivered by academic staff from all four partner universities and leading guest scholars. Based on long term excellence in teaching and research, the programme is devoted to the quality of the environment and related technologies as well as to sustainable management and conservation.

The programme deals both from a technological and managerial perspective, with chemical, physical and biological changes in the environment and considers the behaviour of air, water and soil as they are affected by anthropogenic activities.

The partners are known for their excellent research each one with specific knowledge in the field, who joined forces to provide an integrated, state-of-the-art technological and management education. Through the intensified cooperation between the partners, synergy in research efforts among the academics will be produced, as well as more options for involvement of the students into research at an early stage can be offered. Manifold specialisation modules that contain up-to-date research results, project work based on actual problems from applied and theoretical research, and an entire semester devoted exclusively to thesis work (often part of a larger research project where a number of PhD students, senior researchers and sometimes private stakeholders collaborate), emphasizes the strong JEMES focus on research. The best JEMES graduates are invited to continue towards a doctoral degree.

JEMES provides you with much-demanded qualifications and competences. After successful graduation you will have acquired an outstanding Qualification Profile. In addition to profound subject based competences in Environmental Studies, you will have obtained:

o Research skills and capacity for independent analysis and synthesis,

o Strong aptitude to work in an interdisciplinary, multicultural team,

o Advanced capability to apply knowledge in practice,

o Enhanced fluency in English, working knowledge in two more European languages.

ERASMUS Mundus scholarships, funded by the European Commission, are available for applicants of exceptional merit from "third countries ", i.e. all nationals other than European Union (including EEA/EFTA and accession states). The total value of the scholarship is 42.000 Euros and is intended o cover all your expenses like fees, maintenance, study materials, mobility costs etc.

For European students (i.e. from EU, EEA/ FTA, accession states), JEMES offers an own scholarship program for outstanding European applicants.

Contents

JEMES offers two different "streams": Stream 1 being more oriented towards Technology (Environmental Technology Engineering),and Stream 2 more towards Social Science / Management (Environmental Management Engineering). In both streams, you will be offered fundamental scientific courses, which provide you with a common knowledge base, and topics that reflect the different profiles of each university.

All JEMES students choose and obtain 75% of their credits in one and 25 % in the other stream. You start in your preferred stream and continue in the other stream in the second semester, before deciding for good in which direction to specialise. The third semester

is characterised by its focus on project work, whereas the fourth semester is devoted to research leading to the Masters thesis.

Fields of Excellence of the JEMES Partners:

Stream 1 Environmental Technology Enginnering:

Ecological sanitation; treatment technologies for water, liquid and solid waste, soil

and sediments; assessment and prediction of pollutants behaviour; bio-engineering (TUHH),
