The MA in Migration Studies is a one-year full-time or two-year part-time course, taught at the Brussels campus. It is intended both for those with field or other practical experience working with migrants as well as recent university graduates or those with other experience who have an interest in migration.
The MA in Migration Studies educates students in the core issues of migration, both theoretical and typological, while enabling them to augment their programme with elective modules in another field, including post-conflict peace building, politics of development, law, international relations.
The MA in Migration Studies educates students in the core issues of migration, both theoretical and typological, while enabling them to augment their programme with elective modules in another field, including post-conflict peace building, politics of development, sociology and law. All students take Fundamentals, Dissertation and Research, which provides the necessary foundation and tools to enable students to conduct independent research and scholarship at the postgraduate level.
The programme is divided into three parts. The first part consists of compulsory modules that introduce students to key theoretical, methodological and philosophical foundations of the discipline; in the case of Migration Studies, these are: International Migration: Historical and Contemporary Perspective and Migration Studies: Theory and Research. The second part covers optional modules (electives), comprising specialist migration modules and elective modules from other disciplines, while the third part of the programme consists of the dissertation.
In keeping with the aims and objectives outlined above, the programme is designed so that students develop a knowledge of the theoretical and philosophical debates in the discipline, have access to their application in specialised modules, and develop a capacity to utilise these in their research project, the dissertation.
