EMQAL is a master course for laboratory managers and scientists who wish to implement and manage Quality Systems in analytical laboratories, or work in Quality System environments in accredited analytical laboratories.
The master is offered by a Consortium of five European universities and one Chinese university:
* University of Algarve (Portugal, PT)
* University of Barcelona (Spain, ES)
* University of Bergen (Norway, NO)
* University of Cadiz (Spain, ES)
* Gdansk University of Technology (Poland, PL)
and
* Central South University (China, CN)
The programme duration is 18 month (90 ECTS), consisting of a 1 year (60 ECTS) taught course and a 6 months Project and Thesis (30 ECTS). The main language of instruction is English. Each university also offers an intensive language school during the summer prior to the programme, as well as local language training during the course.
In the first year, classes take place in the Host Institution, and are lectured by specialists from all the partner institutions. The Host university rotates among the European partners of the Consortium.
In 2011/2012, the host institution will be the University of Algarve. After completing the first year, students receive a post-graduate diploma. For completing the master degree, students must gain a minimum of 30 of their credits in a second participating university in a different country: Spain, Norway, Poland. Selected students may complete part of their research thesis, equivalent to 15 ECTS credits, in Central South University, China.
The final Qualification obtained is a European Joint Master Degree in Quality in Analytical Laboratories which is awarded by the European universities that the student visited as part of the ERASMUS MUNDUS programme. Details of the modules and research projects that were followed by the students are given in a Diploma Supplement.
The EMQAL is an extremely flexible course. It is organized in three main disciplines that are crucial for a successful laboratory manager:
* Quality Management (QM) - 10 ECTS
* Analytical Methods (AM) - 10 ECTS
* Data Analysis (DA) - 10 ECTS
* And an optional discipline of 30 ECTS.
Each discipline is made up of “stand alone” modules .
Modules are typically worth 2 ECTS each, last one week, and are lectured by a specialist in the field.
Students must choose 5 optional modules within each main discipline, to fulfil a total of 10 ECTS, and 15 additional modules to fulfil the optional discipline.
Each module has 2 ECTS, so the student should take 30 modules during one year. Each student must take at least 5 modules from each one of the three disciplines – Quality Management, Analytical Methods and Data Analysis. Students are free to choose any modules within each discipline. The remaining 15 modules may be chosen freely, according to student’s background and professional development.
Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of the programme, graduates will have attained the following general competencies and learning outcomes:
1) design, implement and manage a Quality System in any given testing or calibration analytical laboratory;
2) develop and evaluate a quality control scheme for any given type of measurement;
3) fully understand, both at theoretical and practical level, a set of advanced analytical tecnhiques;
4) research, develop and validate new techniques and methods of analysis;
5) plan a validation program for a given method of analysis;
6) identify critical aspects in a given method of analysis
7) estimate the uncertainty for a given analytical result;
8) develop Reference Materials;
9) organize and evaluate Collaborative Studies;
10) fully understand the current state of worldwide standardization and comparability of analytical results.
These competencies can be attained in different environments, for example in the context of a clinical laboratory, or a laboratory for drinking water quality control. Students can obtain these competencies by taking 30 modules, chosen from a large set of modules that are offered in the master.
Modules may be chosen at will to suit the student’s personal and professional interest, provided that:
a) at least 5 modules are chosen from each discipline (Quality Management, Analytical Methods and Data Analysis)
b) all the general learning outcomes outlined above are attained.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

The Master's degree is designed to provide additional education or training in the student's specialized branch of knowledge. The minimum requirements for admission to the Masters are:
1) Strong Academic Background in appropriate disciplines
A "strong academic background" in appropriate disciplines means candidates must hold a high education diploma issued by a competent High Education authority attesting the completion of a degree equivalent to a 1st cycle (180 ECTS), in a field where analytical laboratories play an important role. This may be a degree in Chemistry, Biology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biochemistry, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Food Engineering, Clinical Analysis, Medicine, etc.
2) Demonstrated command of the English language
A "demonstrated command of English" means the candidate must prove he/she can understand, speak and write English proficiently enough to take the majority of modules, which are taught in English.
Possible examples include:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language, TOEFL scores paper 575 / computer 232
- Internet based TOEFL (TOEFL iBT™ ) total score 94
- International English Language Testing System, IELTS scores 6.5
- General Certificate of Education, GCSE, AS Level, A Level
- Cambridge Proficiency Certificate, CPE, Level 4-5
- Oxford Higher Certificate, International Certificate Conference (ICC Stage 3 Technical)
In case the candidate cannot present an official test of English language in time for the deadline for applications, he/she may take the self-test included in the online application. A minimum classification of B2 is required in all fields.
In case of selection, candidates who only took the self-test will be interviewed. The interview will have the objective of confirming the self-test of English proficiency presented in the application. In case the interview shows the proficiency is below what was stated in the application, the application will be cancelled.
3) Adequate financial resources
When you apply there is no guarantee that you will be considered for an ERASMUS or ERASMUS MUNDUS studentship so you should be fully aware of the financial costs of the programme. All candidates must take the financial aspects in consideration when applying. The studentships are extremely competitive and only the very best students in a field of many excellent applicants will be awarded the studentships.
You should indicate clearly if you are relying on ERASMUS, ERASMUS MUNDUS or other studentships to finance your study.
Before final acceptance, candidates who were not awarded a studentship will be required to submit a Guarantee of full financial support for the duration of the studies. The University needs to now that you have sufficient funds to cover the entire period of study. This document must be signed by whomever is meeting your university expenses. It may also have to be certified by a bank or lawyer. Keep a copy of this form since you may also need it to apply for your student visa. Please note, however, that the university will issue the relevant certificate of eligibility for a student visa only if you are able to document fully your source(s) of income.
