Students of this Master's degree programme approach contemporary theatre and dance from an intermedial, interdisciplinary, intercultural and international perspective.
A tremendous diversity of forms, increasing internationalisation and a high degree of reflexivity/self-reflexivity are characteristic of contemporary theatre and dance. They are constantly being influenced by society, and by developments in the world of theatre, dance and the other art disciplines. This complex interrelationship is the primary focus of the Theatre Studies Master's degree. An English-language degree programme, our Master's programme takes an academic approach to theatre and dance, but also like to keep abreast of current practice in theatre and dance. We explore it, pose questions and surprise ourselves: why this, why here, why now, and for what purpose? How can we understand what we see happening in theatre and dance? How can we place this in a cultural-historical context? How can we analyse, interpret and make our own contributions to the continual evolution of theatre and dance? What can theatre tell us about society? How can theatre inform and shape society? The Master's degree programme is offered in close collaboration with the Faculty of Theatre of the Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU).
The Master’s degree programme aims to train independent thinkers who are able to reflect critically on contemporary theatre and dance and who can transfer this perspective to facilitate and promote the development of theory, dramaturgy and the practice of theatre and dance in general, criticism, policy and education. Students will become acquainted with the latest developments in theatre and dance and with the latest critical and theoretical approaches.
The study programme comprises two semesters, each of which is divided into two blocks. During the first semester, you complete four subjects addressing current developments in international contemporary theatre and dance, as well as theoretical models and concepts that can be used to study these developments. Some of these subjects concurrently address theatre and dance. For the remaining subjects, the student is free to select courses specifically geared towards either theatre or dance. During the second semester, you are expected to complete a tailor-made plan, designed to enable you to further specialise in the area of your choice. The degree programme offers various themes (dramaturgy, dance, intermediality, community arts, among others). Alternatively, you can opt to design your own area of specialisation.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
