Location of University of Kent, Canterbury Campus

History & Philosophy of Art at Kent offers opportunities to study with highly regarded scholars in the visual arts. While individual members of staff have a wide range of research interests, there are particular research strengths in the history and theory of photography, the historical interplay of image, theory and institutions, contemporary aesthetics and the history of art theory.

Apart from the compulsory modules, options cover areas such as theaesthetics of film, pictorial representation, materialist aesthetics after Marx, and fakes and forgeries. The research directed special subjects, one in each term, cover topics of an interest to students related to the research of a member of staff.

* Topics in the History of Aesthetics
* Dissertation of 15,000 words

* Thinking Theatre: Theories and Aesthetics of Performance
* Varieties of Artifice: Painting in the Text

Assessment
Assessment is by coursework and dissertation.
