Modules give a thorough grounding in modern statistical methods and cover probability and inference, regression, design and analysis of experiments, sampling, multivariate analysis, analysis of discrete data and modern computational statistics. Applications are drawn from a wide variety of areas including statistical ecology, medical statistics, bioinformatics, Bayesian statistics, nonparametric methods, stochastic processes, time series analysis and financial risk analysis.
You gain experience of analysing real data problems through weekly practical classes and exercises, and some data analysis is also done in small groups. The course also includes training in the comuter language R.
A wide choice of project topics is available, reflecting the diverse research interests of staff. Some projects focus on analysis of particular complex data sets, others are more concerned with generic methodology. Recent project topics have included epidemic modelling, analysis of data related to drug abuse in sport, modelling financial time series and several topics in modern genetics, bioinformatics and proteomics.
