Continuous changes are taking place at urban and regional level and a deeper understanding of how knowledge economies, spatial reorganisation and social dynamics challenge the development of contemporary societies is needed.
The MA in City and Regional Development engages with cutting-edge debates in contemporary urban and regional research. Drawing upon the School of Geography´s internationally recognised strengths, the degree programme explores the interconnections between geographies of economic development, urban governance, innovation and knowledge economies.
The MA City and Regional Development aims to provide academic and professional knowledge, methods and skills to understand changes and dynamics in urban and regional development.
The programme is organised around intensive small group seminars, offering cutting edge exploration of the urban and regional development and in particular:
* A critical engagement with strategies for urban competitiveness and governance;
* An understanding of urban and regional economic dynamics and patterns;
* An examination of the knowledge and cultural economy of cities;
* An exploration of the relationships between globalisation, transnationalism and urban dynamics.
The programme is designed for those who intend to pursue a future career in urban and regional development, private sector property and retail development, or those who wish to undertake further research in urban economic and cultural geography.
The MA in City and Regional Development can be taken either full time (two semesters) or on a part-time basis (four semesters). Students also complete a research dissertation (3 months for FT students; 6 months for PT students).
Most units are assessed via coursework to be submitted during or at the end of the semester in which the unit is studied. A total of 8 study units (usually, but not always, 4 in each semester) are taken and your achievement in each unit determines your overall classification.
For each unit successfully passed, a specific number of credit points is awarded (normally 15), for a total of 120 points. In addition, you will undertake a dissertation worth 60 credit points.
