Industrial Design focuses on intelligent products, systems and services. Therefore there are engineers required with the ability to match technology to the real needs and wishes of users.

The Masters degree program in Industrial Design is based on four pillars: technology, user focus, design and business which means that it is fundamentally multidisciplinary. The Industrial Design department applies a unique teaching model, in which students in both the Bachelors and Masters programs learn on a competency-oriented basis. The ability to directly apply what you learn, and to be able to integrate knowledge, skills and attitude, are essential characteristics of the program. Students progress is monitored by means of half-yearly assessments. One semester of the first Masters year is focused on design, the other semester on design research. The first semester of the second year consists of modules, a Master Class and you will prepare your final Master project, which you will do in the last semester. As a Master of Science in Industrial Design you will have a proactive and multifaceted background in technology covering user research and design as well as technology itself. As a true team player you will be able to respond optimally to issues arising from both industry and the community at large.

The Industrial Design department applies a unique teaching model, in which students in both the Bachelor´s and Master´s programs learn on a competency-oriented basis. The ability to directly apply what you learn, and to be able to integrate knowledge, are essential characteristics of the program. Students´ progress is monitored by means of half-yearly assessments. The competency coach is essential during your learning process. You learn from feedback from coaches, experts, clients and fellow students and have to defend your competency development before an assessment committee, using learning evidence, feedback and self evaluations.

The first semester of the first Master year is focused on design, the second semester on research. The first semester of the second year consists of a flexible exchange. In the last semester you do your final project. The first three semesters you follow 7 modules of which 3 or 4 are compulsory. During modules a (visting) teacher discusses the latest developments in a specific field, leading to related assignments which you have to work on.

Some examples of modules are: vision on ambient intelligence, situated design, software modelling and specification, passion for design, tangible interaction, multivariate maths and multiuser interactions. Application areas or themes throughout the master course are: intelligent spaces (e.g. a room that is able to notice which people are in) and empowering people (e.g. intelligent devices embedded in clothing, such as sensors).

The special Master's degree program Industrial Design lasts two years. Each year consists of 60 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System).

These credit points are subdivided as follows:

First year

- Projects (50%)
- Assignments (30%)
- Workshops and lectures (20%)

Second year

- Final Master´s project (50%)
- Assignments (30%)
- Workshops and lectures (20%)

Internship

During the half-year in which you graduate, you will normally spend a large part of your time with and in a company, often located abroad. These companies include Philips (for example the Philips Homelab), ATR in Japan which focuses on intelligent robots, as well as large companies such as Sony and Ericsson.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
