Strategic information systems are driving the new post-industrial economies.
Software-intensive ICT-based solutions are in the epicentre of this process. New
innovative user and service interfaces combined with agile software and information
system architectures enable new enterprises, ventures, communities, customers
and providers, citizens, and public authorities to become more intensive and pervasive.
Combinations of new information networks and software solutions will open
profitable business opportunities.
The two-year full-time programme (120 credits) provides students a solid knowledge
of business insight to and behavioural, legal, and societal aspects of modern information systems. It enhances skills in communication, knowledge integration, engineering systems, open innovation and technology management from the viewpoints of both business and technology. The programme promotes expertise
in strategic foresight and technology opportunities, including open standards and
service-oriented computing, via lectures, research, projects, design, implementation
and operating activities. Graduates will hold a valued master’s degree in science
from Aalto University.
Technology, entrepreneurship and information system management
SDE provides both a business and a technological perspective in two capstone project
with companies. Students can specialise in technology, innovation, design or enterprise
information systems. The curriculum is closely linked with Aalto University’s
Service Factory, the Europe-wide ICT Labs research network, and international partner
universities. Theoretical frameworks are combined with real industry cases in
IT, telecommunications, media, entertainment, finance, and the public sector.
Course topics include:
• Software and information systems engineering
• Innovation, use-inspired concepts and entrepreneurship
• User-driven service and experience design
• Enterprise information systems management
• Computer and information systems research
• Contemporary software business cases

The general admission requirements are the same for all programmes. See also language requirements (both links can be found in the link section).
Programme-specific requirements
Admission criteria to the programme is a high quality Bachelor’s degree (minimum 180 ECTS credits or equivalent) in computer science or software engineering. Excellent candidates with degrees in other areas such as information systems, engineering, natural sciences, mathematics, economics, or industrial arts will be considered if they have sufficient studies and experience in computer science e.g. programming and mathematical methods.
The applicant should have
* a knowledge of basic concepts of programming, computing, algorithms, databases, information systems and solution development including computer programming and software engineering.
* a minimum of 20 ECTS of technical computer, informatics or software related studies.
Knowledge in some of the following is considered an advantage:
High quality bachelor's thesis or major in computer engineering (CE), computer systems (CS), distributed systems (DS), embedded systems (ES), information systems (IS), information technology (IT), information networks (IN), software engineering (SE), human centered interfaces (HCI) or media design (MD).
Students chosen to the SDE programme may be required to complement their earlier degree with complementary studies. All students with a Finnish University of Applied Sciences (AMK) degree are required to take complementary studies package. Complementary or personal complementary studies cannot be included in the Master’s degree.
