Whether your ambition is to do research or to apply biomedical research in practice, you should seriously consider getting your MSc in Biomedical Sciences in Nijmegen. This programme is an excellent preparation for anyone contemplating a career dedicated to improving human health. And others appear to share this view.

For over 20 years, research institutes and health-care organisations all over the world have been employing graduates from Nijmegen. The education programmes of the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the Radboud University Nijmegen score extremely high in the rankings of Dutch universities. Moreover, an external assessment concluded that this programme, which produces around 70 graduates each year, is the best of its kind in the Netherlands. The assessment team were particularly impressed by the unique system of subject area tutors and the caliber of the teaching staff.

Top-flight research & unique form of guidance

This degree programme has a strong link with research at cutting-edge institutes such as the Nijmegen Centre for Molecular Life Sciences (NCMLS), the Nijmegen Centre for Evidence-Based Practice (NCEBP) and the Nijmegen Institute for Infection, Inflammation and Immunity (N4i). Leading scientists in fields ranging from metabolism, membrane transport, neuromuscular disease and inflammation to screening efficacy, clinical interventions and evidence-based medicine are involved in the teaching programme as lecturers and tutors.

There are six major tutors who are responsible for maintaining the quality of each of the majors within the programme as well as for coaching students in their specialist area. This system provides intensive career consultancy - an extremely valuable feature which is often lacking in other educational programmes.

Career profiles

The training is designed to allow you to master the methodology of a specific scientific discipline and then apply this to real societal problems.
The scope of Biomedical Sciences at Nijmegen is deliberately kept broad by positioning courses within the framework of three career-oriented profiles:

  • Research (in preparation for a PhD),
  • Consultancy (with a focus on health policy analysis)
  • Communication of health-related issues.

Please note: since the Consultancy profile and Communication profile are directed to the health care system in the Netherlands, these two profiles with their elective courses are only taught in Dutch.

Contents

The programme starts each year in september. The theoretical part is modular in structure and consists of 120 EC spread over two years. You major in one (or two) of the six major subjects within one of three main profiles, which will determine the field in which other choices are made. The major-specific modules are mostly taught in the first year. In the final year the focus shifts to individual work, including a substantial internship, which will lead to your MSc thesis. All courses for the research profile are taught in English.

Please note: since the Consultancy profile and Communication profile are directed to the health care system in the Netherlands, these two profiles with their elective courses are only taught in Dutch.
