Location of Radboud University Nijmegen

The Water and Environment specialisation of the Biology Master aims at the insight needed to tackle problems such as climate change, flooding, eutrophication, chemical pollution, habitat fragmentation and bio-invasions.

We provide you with the laboratory, field and assessment tools needed to protect ecosystem and human health in the context of multiple environmental pressures.

Specialisations in one of three sub-tracks:

  • Nature and Water Management(NWM)
  • Transnational Water Management(TWM): an international programme set-up together with the University of Duisburg-Essen
  • Human and Environmental Risk Assessment (HERA) of chemicals, together with the Radboud University Medical Centre

Each of our students receives personal supervision. In combination with a wide differentiated choice of topics within the programme, this has made the programme very attractive for those seeking quality and a study that fits their specific interests.

Nijmegen scientists have extensive international networks and participate in EU INTERREG (inter-regional) research projects. Not only do 50% of our students come from abroad, but there are also many opportunities for them to organize one of the two research internships elsewhere in the world.

Most students follow their first internship at our own faculty followed by an external internship in the second year of the Master's programme. This can be at another faculty or research institute in Nijmegen, it is strongly encouraged to broaden your horizon and follow an internship outside Nijmegen or even abroad. At the same time, students have to participate in several courses which are mostly scheduled on Fridays.

Within the track Transnational Ecosystem-based Water Management (TWM) - a joint degree programme with the Universities of Duisberg and Essen - students follow courses in Germany for six months.

Career prospects

The track Water and Environment provides you with the qualifications you need for positions at research institutes, industry, consultancies, universities, governments and other scientific and management oriented organisations.
