The molecular regulation of cellular processes is crucial for human development, and maintenance of health throughout life. It is evident that cellular malfunction is the cause of common multi-factorial diseases such as diabetes, immune and inflammatory disorders, renal disease, cardiovascular, metabolic and neurodegenerative diseases as well as obesity and cancer.
In the fight against such diseases, the Nijmegen Centre for Molecular Life Sciences (NCMLS) Graduate School – which is part of Radboud University Nijmegen – plays a key role. A major goal of the NCMLS is to generate basic knowledge in the Molecular Life Sciences and to translate this knowledge into clinical application, in order to improve diagnostics and develop new treatments.
The NCMLS offers an exclusive Master's programme in Molecular Mechanisms of Disease, which is provided by top researchers and clinicians. The three main themes in both research and education are:
Programme objectives
This highly selective programme provides a sound balance of theory and practice: major goal is to generate basic knowledge in molecular life sciences and translate that knowledge into clinical experimental research in patients.
At the end of the programme you will be qualified to :
We enrol a maximum of 24 students per year, each of whom is allocated a personal mentor as well as research supervisors. This selective approach guarantees excellence, especially during the research training period.
This unique programme develops disease-related basic research in biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology and genetics and translates it into clinical experimental research in patients. The programme starts with 4.5 months of theoretical courses, which provide a sound knowledge basis for a future career in molecular biomedical research.
During the two research training periods of 5 and 7 months students experience the real life of a researcher, performing their own research projects under the supervision of experienced scientists. Students are stimulated to visit conferences and (where possible) present their own data in front of a scientific audience.
The two year programme is structured as follows:
THEORETICAL COURSES (chronologically)
Introduction to Molecular Mechanisms of Disease
Excellence in Communication
Science and Society
Infection, immunity and regenerative medicine
Metabolism, transport and motion
Cell growth and differentiation
International Masterclasses Genomics and Statistics
Elective Courses
RESEARCH TRAINING PERIODS
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
