Philosophers do not do all of this because they know more than specialists in other fields. On the contrary, in each specific field, they probably know less than the specialist. But ideally, they possess two skills and two qualities that enable them to make an important contribution nonetheless. The two skills are, on the one hand, an ability to analyse complex issues logically and conceptually and, on the other, an ability to document their conclusions in clear and persuasive language. The crucial qualities are curiosity and scepticism vis-à-vis all claims that they have not examined themselves.

Such skills are not innate. They require intensive training. The Research Master's programme in Philosophy constitutes the first professional step towards the acquisition of these skills.

The programme

The International Research Master's programme in Philosophy is a two-year course, which Radboud University Nijmegen offers jointly with Tilburg University. It was established for students of proven ability who wish to prepare for an academic career in philosophy. Both universities have an excellent reputation. The programmes offered by the Nijmegen Research Institute for Philosophy were in 2006 rated high to excellent in the latest evaluation by an international commission of peers.

We combine internationally acclaimed research with excellent teaching. This has great advantages for you as a Research Master's student. You can choose from one of the widest range of philosophical specialisations in Europe, with courses and seminars that are exclusively taught in English at both universities. You will receive expert supervision in continental, analytic and historical approaches to philosophy and, if you intend to embark on an academic career, this course will give you the necessary research skills.

The programme is structured as follows:

First year (60 EC)

  • a two-semester seminar on research methodologies (18 EC)
  • training in academic writing and presentation skills (6 EC)
  • a Research Master's seminar in your area of specialisation (9 EC)
  • two regular Master's seminars of your own choice (18 EC)
  • a research essay (9 EC)

Second year (60 EC)

  • 3 Research Master's seminars in your area of specialisation (27 EC)
  • training in academic skills (3 EC)
  • a Research Master's thesis(30 EC)

Note that if you already have an Master's degree in philosophy, you can apply for a waiver; depending on your previous course work, you may be allowed to enter directly into the second year of this programme.

What makes this programme special?

  • In-depth Master's classes in History of philosophy and Contemporary philosophy
  • Research seminars in Hermeneutics, Philosophy of mind, Philosophy of language and Logic, Metaphysics, Philosophical anthropology, Ethics, Philosophy of the social sciences, and the History of philosophy
  • The opportunity to discuss your ideas with leading philosophers
  • A personal tutor who guides you throughout the programme
