How do you perceive the outside world? How do you focus your attention on something in your environment? How do you manage when the environment is constantly changing? And how does your memory function? How do you recall a telephone number once you are already dialling?
How do you manoeuvre through an overcrowded shopping street? How is it that you can walk effortlessly from one room to another? And how do you cope with your eyes closed? How do you pick up a cup or catch a ball? And how come you can still catch that ball if there is a sudden gust of wind?
And what about language? How is it possible that you understand a sentence the moment you hear it - and not dozens of seconds later? How do you produce language? How do you explain the fact that you often start speaking even before you know exactly what you want to say - and yet still manage to produce intelligible speech most of the time?
Cognitive Neuroscience
Cognitive neuroscience studies the cognitive and neural basis for such diverse mental functions as perception, action, language, attention and memory. This relatively young discipline seeks to unravel the workings of the human brain. What happens in our brains when we do what we do? How is this fascinating, unbelievably complex ‘microcosmos’ inside our skulls organized? How do those billions of nerve cells collaborate in an organ no bigger than half a football?
Thanks to advanced brain-imaging techniques today scientists are able to observe the human brain in action. In their research, cognitive neuroscientists do hence no longer solely have to rely on patients with brain damage to ascertain which parts of the brains are involved in which tasks and functions. They can now conduct targeted experiments on healthy persons. As a result of this development, the discipline has gained tremendous momentum over the past twenty years. As many already know, cognitive neuroscience is the discipline of the future.
The Donders Institute for Brain, Cogntion and Behaviour has four research themes and these themes are also expressed by the Master’s programme in the form of four specializations:
All courses are given by top researchers, who also supervise the traineeships and the writing of the Master’s theses for all three specializations. English is the lingua franca for all four specializations.
Four common core courses
The four specializations in the Master’s programme have a common basis. In the first year you will become acquainted with the most important theories, models, techniques and analysis methods in Cognitive Neuroscience. For this purpose you will follow the following four core courses together with students from the other specializations:
Skill training
You have to choose two out of the following four courses:
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Do you have a Bachelor’s degree in linguistics, physics, biology, medicine, mathematics, physics, behavioural sciences or related discipline? If so, you may apply for the Cognitive Neuroscience Master’s programme. Every applicant will be screened individually to ascertain whether he/she is eligible to participate in the programme.
English skills
The CNS Master's programme is an English programme: all courses and examinations are taught in English. Foreign students please note that the CNS programme requires the following minimum scores: TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 250 (computer-based test), 100 (internet-based test); IELTS 7.0 or higher.
Mathematics & Physics
Students who did not follow physics in their highschool curriculum and/or who have not been trained in mathematics at level B (including concepts such as matrix algebra, differentation, integration, complex numbers), are advised before the start of the programme to work on the assignment in Chapters 1, 2, 7, 8 and 11 (three chapters on physics and two on mathematics) of R.K. Hobbie: "Intermediate Physics for Medicine and Biology", Springer Verlag, New York, 1997; third edition, ISBN 1-56396-458-9).
