In the Master´s degree program in Medical Engineering you will follow the rapid developments in the field of (bio)medical technology, and you will learn to translate these to the needs of clinical practice. You will gain knowledge and experience in quantifying patient measurements, and you will use the results as input for (mathematical) models. During the Master´s degree program you will learn to use models for patient-specific solutions, improving the diagnostic abilities of doctors and enabling them to make a more soundly based choice of treatment. In addition, you will learn to carry out self-reliant clinical research.
As a future medical engineer you will also gain insight into the healthcare system. Once you start your career, you will ultimately be able to act as a fully-fledged member of treatment teams, with your own specific tasks and responsibilities.
The Master's program is a co-operation between the TU/e and the Maastricht University (UM). Therefore, education and research take place in Eindhoven and in Maastricht. Several departments of both instututions are involved in the program
The Master Medical Engineering is a two-year program, in which one year is 60 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System).
The credits are distributed as follows:
First year
- Courses (40%)
- Clinical modules (26%)
- Internship (34%)
Second year
- Master's project (100%)
Courses
A relatively small part (about 30%) of the graduate program is devoted to courses. Most of the program takes place in the following hospitals:
- Academisch Ziekenhuis Maastricht (at least 50%)
- Máxima Medisch Centrum (Veldhoven, Eindhoven)
- Catherina Ziekenhuis (Eindhoven)
The rest of the course is provided at Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TU/e).
A broad range of electives is available to you, because many different disciplines from engineering and medicine are relevant to Medical Engineering. Examples are: radiotherapy, imaging, biomaterials and radiology. You are given the opportunity to develop yourself into a specialist on a certain topic, but you could also use this individual phase to expand your scope and to familiarize yourself with different fields of study that are relevant to your development. Of course it is also possible for you to opt for a combination of the possibilities mentioned above.
Clinical Modules
The clinical modules play an important role in the program. These allow you to become familiar with the medical and technological aspects of the various clinical disciplines (such as radiology, clinical chemistry, surgery and cardiology) and the role that the medical engineer can play in them. A clinical module integrates lectures, practical work, demonstrations and projects through which you come into contact with medical specialists and become familiar with everyday work in the clinic. For example you will be present during visits, operations and current medical research. You will take two of the following three clinical modules: coronary and vascular diseases, oncology or neurology.
Internship opportunities
At the end of the first year you will follow an external internship. This internship allows you to deepen your knowledge of the clinical disciplines with which you have become familiar during the clinical modules in the first year. You will carry out research in this area over a period of 3 months, while working in a research group at a hospital, either in the Netherlands or abroad. This will give you a good impression of the current research projects. The internship will enable you to gain research experience and to develop the professional approach that you will need for your graduation project. The graduation project takes up the whole second year of the Master´s program.
Graduation project
An important aspect of your last year is the final project. The final project comprises your participation in clinical research. Often a short stay in the business community or abroad forms part of the final year. During your final phase you work together a lot with experienced researchers and medical specialists. In addition, attention is devoted to the latest developments in the clinical field. You conclude your project with a written report and an oral presentation.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country. Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test. More information
The prerequisite for admission is a Bachelor´s degree in Biomedical Engineering (BSc). Candidates holding a Bachelor´s degree in a related field may be admitted as well, depending on the academic level and scientific contents of the program in question. Upon obtaining a Master´s degree, students are eligible to enter an admission procedure for a 4-year PhD program.
There is a special requirement for the Master's program Medical Engineering: You need to speak and understand Dutch sufficiently. This requirement comes from the fact that some obligatory modules of the program take place in the (Dutch) clinic.
The general requirements for admission to the TU/e Master's of Science programs are:
- A relevant Bachelor's degree (or equivalent), based on a program of sufficient academic level and quality to be able to complete the TU/e Master's program in question.
- Sufficient mastery of the English language. To prove sufficient command of the English language you should submit an Academic IELTS or TOEFL test.
- Experience shows that students with BSc Grade Point Average (GPA) for the Bachelor's study of at least 75% are more likely to be admitted to a TU/e Master´s program.
- There may also be specific additional requirements for some Master's programs, depending on the nature of your prior education.
- Non-EEA students who are admitted to a TU/e Master's program, but who do not receive a recognised scholarship or a student grant from the Dutch government, are required to transfer a sum of 10,000 euro to the TU/e.
