Human activities have become a significant factor affecting the functioning of the Earth system. Our use of natural resources has increased more than ten-fold over the last 200 years, and future growth will increase the pressures on the system. Deforestation and soil erosion, the release of potentially toxic elements and chemical compounds to surface and ground waters, pathogen contamination of waters and the increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, are all examples of such pressures. The effects on the biosphere are of particular concern, because they have potentially serious consequences for humanity and other life on Earth.
There is a requirement for well-trained postgraduates who can combine adequate understanding of the processes which give rise to environmental degradation and pollution problems with capability in management of natural resources, and who can thus play a vital role in devising and enacting strategies to protect and conserve the environment, both in Europe and beyond.
Edinburgh is a unique location to study Environmental Science: there is a long history of collaboration between the Scottish Agricultural College, the University and major research institutes particularly the Institute of Terrestrial Ecology. Each of these institutions have a strong scientific interest in the science related to pollution in rural areas. The research base from which this MSc programme emanates relates principally to the interactions between land use and soil, water and atmospheric quality.
The programme starts in September each year and lasts nine months (for the Diploma) and twelve months (for the MSc). The curriculum consists of:
* a taught component during the Autumn and Spring Semesters (September to March);
* a 7-day overseas Study Tour (April), visiting field sites illustrating various aspects of sustainability;
* a 22-week individual research project, written up as a dissertation (May to August).
Taught Component
The taught component consists of six courses of lectures: three courses in Autumn Term and three in Spring Term. All students attend and complete the two compulsory core courses, one in each semester:
* Atmospheric Quality and Global Change
* Land Use/Environmental Interactions
In addition four courses are selected from the general list of courses available in the School of GeoSciences, College of Science and Engineering. Each course has a nominal 40 hrs contact, made up of lectures, seminars, workshops and exercises. The following courses are particularly recommended:
* Waste Reduction and Recycling
* Water Resource Management
* Soil Protection and Management
* Environmental Impact Assessment
Other modules include:
* Management of Sustainable Development
* Applications in Ecological Economics
* Environmental Ethics
* Environmental Impact Assessment
* Conservation and Use of Forest Resources
* Forests and Environment
* Foundations in Ecological Economics
* Geographic Information Systems
* Participation in Policy and Planning
* Project Appraisal
* Vegetation Management
There will be examination paper at the end of each semester as well as continuous assessment. An oral examination may be given.
Study Tour
A field tour of about two weeks will be an integral part of the study programme. Recent study tours have been to Northern Greece, Portugal and Israel. There is also usually a short pre-course tour and, by agreement, a dissertation write-up retreat, in late July.
Dissertation
Each student will conduct an individual project on a subject approved by the Head of Institute. Candidates proceeding to the Diploma will submit a report by the end of June, while MSc candidates will submit an approximately 12,000 word dissertation in late August.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

The course will be particularly attractive to:
* graduates in natural sciences who wish to work in fields relating to environmental protection;
* students from disciplines such as ecology, agriculture, forestry and related disciplines who are keen to understand the scientific basis of environmental management;
* students from developing countries as well as from advanced economies.
Applicants should have a University degree or its equivalent in natural, biological or environmental sciences, geography, economics or an equivalent discipline. Related work experience is desirable. Evidence of proficiency in English must be provided by those for whom this is not their first language. A precourse English language tuition programme is available, organised specifically by the University's Institute for Applied Language Studies.
Evidence of proficiency in English is required to (one of..) the following levels:
* IELTS 6.5, with scores of at least 6 in each section
* TOEFL Paper 580, with scores of at least 55 in each section and 4.0 in the TWE
* TOEFL Computer 237, with scores of at least 21 in each section and 4.0 in the writing section
* TOEFL iBT 92, with at least 20 in each section
Before you enroll for your course, you will be expected to take a short English test at the Institute of Applied Language Studies in Edinburgh, unless your result is the equivalent of 7.0 or above in IELTS. The Test of English at Matriculation (TEAM) is a diagnostic one which is taken in addition to any other English result you may have. Depending on the results of this, you may be recommended or required to take further tuition in specified areas. This tuition is free of charge and is taken alongside your academic studies in the Autumn or Spring terms. Details of this will be sent to you with your admission papers.
