Programme Description

Crop science is the basis of agricultural production. The goal is to develop crops and cropping systems with highest efficiency in converting light and supplemental resource into

* Food
* Feed
* Fiber

Crop scientists breed crops and develop cropping systems that are profitable and ecologically sustainable.

In the view of the still increasing world population and the not extendable cropping area, this goal is in the focal point of mankind today and even more in the future.

The Master Programme Crop Sciences seeks to apply biological, physiological, molecular genetic and biometric principles to crops and cropping systems to increase their efficiency. Graduates are prepared to creatively solve the changing problems in modern crop development, production and management. This requires a breadth of understanding, from basic biology, physiology and ecology to bioinformatics and expert systems.

Crop Sciences majors at Universität Hohenheim concentrate on the interrelationships among the physiological and biological factors regulating crop productivity.

Hohenheim offers world-wide one of the most extensive study programme in the crop sciences. The scientific infrastructure with 4 research stations as well as the State Plant Breeding Institute are unique and offer to students the possibility to apply learned knowledge from theory directly into the practice.

The curriculum has 3 majors and is designed especially to promote the following skills:

* to apply biological, physiological, molekular genetic and biometric principles to crops and cropping systems
* to solve the changing problems in modern crop development production and management
* a greater breadth of understanding from basic biology, physiology and ecology to bioinformatics and expert systems

Crop Physiology and Nutrition: The focus of this major will be on plant nutrition, plant symbioses, crop quality improvement as well as on crop-environment interactions to develop technological approaches and management practices with the objective of high-yield and quality of fruit and grain crops.

Plant Breeding and Seed Science: Students will be trained in the entire repertoire of classical and modern technologies in plant breeding, breeding methodological thinking, biometry in plant breeding as well as in seed science.

Crop Protection: Starting with descriptive and molecular biology as well as modern strategies of crop protection, students then may further specialize in phytopathology, entomology or weed science.

Structure of the Master Programme
The two-year M.Sc. programme comprises four semesters, during which fifteen thematic modules of which six or seven are compulsory modules and five or six are elective modules, and the master thesis must be completed. One semester is reserved for the thesis work. The language of instruction is English.

Semester 1:
3 Compulsory Modules
- Bioinformatics
- Crop Physiology
- Methods of Scientific Working for Crop Sciences

Semester 2:
6 - 7 Compulsory Modules in one of the 3 Majors
- Crop Physiology and Nutrition
- Crop Protection
- Plant Breeding and Seed Science

Semester 3:
5 - 6 Elective Modules from the catalogue of agricultural master modules including more than 70 modules in English and 100 modules in German

Semester 4:
Master Thesis

Requirements

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country. Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test. More information

For admission, an above-average Bachelor of Science or equivalent degree in Agricultural Biology, Agricultural Sciences or a related discipline with a course content of 50 % of these two B.Sc. degrees is required, following at least three years of university studies. Admission is ultimately based on students' grade point averages. Basic understanding of nature sciences and computer literacy are assumed. For German students, an above-average FH-Degree are generally acceptable instead of a Bachelors Degree.

Over and above these general entry requirements, selection will be based upon grades, educational background and relevant professional experience. Additional professional qualifications can also be considered.

Applicants whose first language is not English have to provide proof of proficiency in English (i.e. in TOEFL or IELTS Academic Test). TOEFL Scores are a minimum of

* 550 Points in the Paper-based Test
* 213 Points in the Computer-based Test or
* 79 Points in the Internet-based TOEFL Test
