This well-established and popular MSc programme is offered by the Centre for the study of Environmental Change and Sustainability (CECS). The programme is designed both for students whose primary interest is in the application of science and engineering to environmental problems and also to students interested in the human ecological and socio-economic aspects of sustainability. Its wide-ranging, interdisciplinary approach to sustainability issues reflects that of the Centre itself.
The aims of the Centre are to promote research and teaching in the areas of environmental change and sustainability, by working across traditional disciplinary boundaries, both within and outside the University. It is part of the School of GeoSciences, which has ninety academic staff working in ecology, environmental science, geography, geology and meteorology. The Centre also works in partnership with the Scottish Agricultural College, academic units from the University's College of Humanities and Social Science, and with external organisations, bringing together expertise in a wide range of disciplines to deliver the MSc programme.
The unique feature of the programme is its interdisciplinary core, which provides students with a broad and integrated understanding of sustainable development. Students are able to devise study programmes suited to their personal interests and career goals through their choice of optional courses and individual research project.
The programme starts in September each year and lasts nine months (for the Diploma) and twelve months (for the MSc). The programme consists of:
* a taught component during the first and second semesters (September to April);
* an 18-week individual research project, written up as a dissertation (May to August).
Taught Component
The taught component consists of six courses of lectures: three courses in first semester and three in second semester. All students attend and complete the two compulsory core courses, one in each semester:
* Principles of Environmental Sustainability
* Management of Sustainable Development
The additional four courses are selected from a wide range offered within related MSc programmes. The following courses are recommended:
* Applications in Ecological Economics
* Atmospheric Quality and Global Change
* Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation
* Climate Change Management
* Culture, Ethics and Environment
* Energy Policy and Politics
* Environmental Impact Assessment
* Forests and Environment
* Foundations in Ecological Economics
* Integrated Resource Management
* Integrated Resource Planning
* International Development
* Land Use - Environment Interactions
* Participation in Policy and Planning
* Project Appraisal
* Rural Development
* Water Resource Management
Research Project
Each student conducts an individual research project on a subject chosen in consultation with the Programme Director, and is allocated two supervisors to guide and monitor their work. Supervisors are drawn from both within the University and from associated institutions, allowing students to conduct research in a wide range of areas relevant to sustainability. MSc candidates write up their work as a dissertation of up to 20,000 words, which is submitted by the end of August. Candidates for the Diploma submit a shorter report by the end of June.
