Tourism is one of the fastest growing industries in the world. Globalization and new technologies have created new touristic opportunities for consumers, but also caused global competition among providers and tourist destinations. Hence, successful tourism development requires skillful labor with good knowledge of tourist industry, society and environment.

Against this background, the Department of Social and Economic Geography and the Faculty of Social Science, Umeå University, have launched the Master Program in Tourism.

The program offers advanced insights into the tourist industry and provides student with the opportunity to develop their knowledge and interests within the field of tourism. The program applies broad perspectives on tourism by combining various scientific approaches.

Students meet researchers not only from the Faculty of Social Science, but also from the Humanities and Sciences introducing issues related to history, ethnology and ecology. The program qualifies successful students for work in tourism within public and private sector.

Contents

The master program in tourism is multi-disciplinary and integrates knowledge from various fields within the social sciences, arts and sciences. Main focus is put on human geography and more explicitly tourism geography.

During the first year students are provided with an overview of international tourism research and various scientific approaches in the field. After that focus is put on destination development. Initially this is done from a theoretical perspective, and then this knowledge is applied empirically. During the first part of the second terms students have the opportunity to choose a course from another area within the social sciences or engage in applied studies at a work place. The year ends with a course addressing various aspects of human mobility. Alternatively, students can write a magister thesis in tourism and earn the degree of a magister in social science with specialization in tourism.

The master program continues with a course on tourism in rural and peripheral areas, followed by a course on tourism and regional development. In both courses theoretical studies are combined with methodological training and empirical applications. During the final term students are conducting a minor scientific project and report it in a master thesis. By fulfilling this study program students earn the degree master of social science with specialization in tourism.

After finishing the program students should be able to

* show advanced knowledge and insights including destination analysis and current tourism research as well as advanced knowledge within certain fields of tourism;
* show their ability to critically assess scientifc theories and methodologies as well as to contribute with innovative thinking;
* show their ability to plan and conduct qualified destination analysis based on theoretical and methodological considerations;
* show their ability to plan and conduct a minor scientifc study and to write a scientific text about the study based on theoretical and methodological knowledge;
* show their ability to communicate complex touristic phenomena in oral and written form
