The courses of the programme are linked with current and recent research carried out in collaboration with companies and international university partners. They provide a theoretical framework for services and link it with real-life cases in the fields of e.g. healthcare, IT, telecommunications, retail and industrial services.
Course topics include:
* Service operations management, including the design and management of service supply chains, processes, quality, life cycles, assets, and installed base
* Service business economics, including revenue models, contracting and outsourcing
* Human resource management, including staffing, scheduling, recruiting and retention
* Service innovations, including co-production and co-creation
The programme is organised by the Department of Industrial Engineering and
Management (DIEM). DIEM carries out research in close cooperation with industry
and thus combines academic rigour and practical relevance in its research and education. Cooperation partners include Nokia, Metso, and IBM, as well as
healthcare service providers, such as the Helsinki University Central Hospital and
Kaiser Permanente. The research focuses on the interface between business and
technology.
What will you learn?
The programme is based on current research conducted in close cooperation with
industrial and international university partners. The programme links a theoretical
framework for services to real-life cases in the fields of, for instance, healthcare, IT,
telecommunications, retail and industrial services. The content of the studies slightly
varies depending on the bachelor’s degree of each student, but the main topics are
common for all: service operations management, service business, economics
service purchasing, human resource management, and service innovations
Employment in the service industry DIEM students and graduates are warmly
welcomed by industry. They have skills to work for different types of organisations
developing, producing or buying services, such as industrial services or knowledge-intensive business services. The programme also prepares them for proceeding towards a doctoral degree at Aalto University.

Programme-specific requirements
The Department of Industrial Engineering and Management is responsible for the academic assessment of the applications for SeM. Enrolment is limited and the evaluation process is highly competitive. Applicants are assessed on the basis of the following criteria:
* previous academic performance (grades)
* content of the previous degree(s)
* dedication to the Master’s Programme of Service Management and Engineering
* language proficiency
* relevant work experience or other relevant activity
* recognition of the home university
* recommendations
The most important criteria are the previous academic performance and the content of the previous degree(s).
A successful applicant should have been among the best students (top 10-15%) in his or her home university. The degree certificate and/or the official transcript of university records should clearly indicate this. For example, an applicant has achieved consistently the best grades throughout the degree studies (very high weighted average grade or GPA), which typically leads to graduation with distinction. When evaluating each applicant’s academic performance, we emphasize the grades achieved in the degree that gives the eligibility for applying.
A successful applicant should also have a valid degree in the field of technology, or some other applicable field. Therefore, preference will be given to applicants with B.Sc. degrees in engineering, natural sciences, mathematics or computer science. The applicant’s degree studies should indicate that she or he has good knowledge of one technical discipline and engineering mathematics plus basic knowledge of management. The desired amount of management studies is 20 ECTS, covering at least the basic concepts of marketing, operations management, organizational behaviour and management accounting.
If the applicant has several relevant degrees, all attached information will affect the assessment concerning performance and content. However, the number of degrees or amount of studies is not a criterion. The Selection Board reserves the right to decide whether or not a degree and/or a university meet the criteria.
Students chosen to the Service Management and Engineering programme may be required to complement their earlier degree with complementary studies. All students with a Finnish University of Applied Sciences (AMK) degree are required to take complementary studies package. Complementary or personal complementary studies cannot be included in the Master’s degree.
