The Master's Degree Program
The Master's degree program Sustainable Energy Technology trains engineers with broadly based knowledge of energy technology. To provide a good technical base, the program starts with a number of basic courses such as physical transport phenomena. This knowledge is applied in the specialized courses in the field of energy from biomass, solar and wind energy, hydrogen as a sustainable energy carrier and intelligent electrical networks. This fundamental knowledge is a primary requirement for evaluation of the different technologies and assessment of their feasibility.
Graduation options
The multidisciplinary research in the field of sustainable energy technology is organized into six themes. You can grduate in one of these themes.
* energy from biomass
* solar energy
* wind energy
* hydrogen technology
* electrical power engineering
* energy and society
The program is a joint initiative of the following 6 departments:
* Mechanical Engineering
* Applied Physics
* Chemical Engineering and Chemistry
* Electrical Engineering
* Architecture, Building and Planning
* Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences
The Sustainable Energy Technology discipline combines a number of tracks and is based on research carried out by the six participating departments. Research groups from these departments combine sustainability with research in the field of energy technology. Focal areas are photovoltaic solar energy, energy from biomass, hydrogen technology, electrical energy technology and system innovation. The department of physics, for example, carries out research into PV solar cells. The efficiency of solar cells is being improved by the use of plasma to deposit thin layers. In the Mechanical Engineering department the process of the combustion and gasification of biomass is optimized using simulation. This department also houses the biomass lab, where several departments carry out their experiments. The `power quality lab´ at the Electrical Engineering department researches the connection of distributed generation to the electrical network.
The Master's degree program is offered by the Dutch '3TU federation' of TU Eindhoven, TU Delft and the University of Twente.
The Master's degree program Sustainable Energy Technology lasts two years and consists of 120 EC (European Credit Transfer System). These credit points are subdivided as follows:
First year
* compulsory courses (50 EC)
* elective courses (11 EC)
Second year
* internal research traineeship (9 EC)
* graduation project (50 EC)
Compulsory courses
An understanding of the energy infrastructure and the community in which the technology is to be applied is required. As a student you will therefore take courses in which the introduction of technical innovations in the community is a central element, together with attention for economics and consumer behavior. You will learn how to apply the knowledge that you have gained in projects involving both the system-based and interdisciplinary approaches.
Elective courses
The elective courses which you choose together with your supervisor allow you to gain more specialized knowledge, which you will need for your final project, your graduation research project or your design project.
Projects
Each student has to participate in two integration projects. In the first project you will participate in a group, the second project you will do individually. The multidisciplinary subjects for these projects are formulated in close cooperation with industry and research institutes. The goal of the projects is to teach you how to apply knowledge. Both system thinking and the interaction between technical and social sciences are part of this. Most projects will be design-based and/or contain practical elements (for example taking measurements). The individual system integration project serves as a preparation for your graduation project.
Traineeship
All students will perform a research traineeship. The main objective of the internship is to prepare for the graduation project. The subject and place of the internship will therefore be chosen in close cooperation with the graduation supervisor. This also implies that the objective can and will be different for different students. Some students may need more in depth theoretical study while others need some experience with experimental work before starting their graduation project.
Graduation project
You work on your theme specialization within one of the research groups involved in the program, specializing in this field by means of electives and your research traineeship. In addition, your graduation project is related to the research performed in the research group of your specialization. You can graduate at TU/e or one of the partner institutes: Delft University of Technology, University of Twente or the Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN). Approximately eight months are allocated for the graduation phase.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country. Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test. More information
The general requirements for admission to the TU/e Master's of Science programs are:
* A relevant Bachelor's degree (or equivalent), based on a program of sufficient academic level and quality to be able to complete the TU/e Master's program in question.
* Sufficient mastery of the English language. To prove sufficient command of the English language you should submit an Academic IELTS or TOEFL test.
* Experience shows that students with BSc Grade Point Average (GPA) for the Bachelor's study of at least 75% are more likely to be admitted to a TU/e Master´s program.
* There may also be specific additional requirements for some Master's programs, depending on the nature of your prior education.
* Non-EEA students who are admitted to a TU/e Master's program, but who do not receive a recognised scholarship or a student grant from the Dutch government, are required to transfer a sum of 10,000 euro to the TU/e.
