Location of Tampere University of Technology

The Master's Degree Programme in Biomedical Engineering is one of seven international programmes of Tampere University of Technology and it was launched in 2006. The programme is coordinated by the Department of Biomedical Engineering that has a long tradition in education on biomedical engineering in English language. The education in the Programme is carried out in close collaboration with other faculties of the university and with the local University Hospital.

The Programme offers students a high quality education and challenging classes. The education combined with the research prepares students for flexible professional career opportunities in versatile and challenging field of Biomedical Engineering. You can choose between several majors and minors, and you are able to select courses that meet your interests.

Biomedical Engineering is an integral element of modern health care and clinical medicine. Application of electronics, sensors, information technology and biomaterials with deep understanding of the theory and modeling of vital physiological systems of the human body have had a crucial impact to the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic methods and devices.

All available education

The total amount of Biomedical Engineering courses offered by the Department of Biomedical Engineering is about 200 credit units. They are mostly given in English.

International students are exempted from the Finnish and Swedish language requirements. However, the course Finnish for Beginners (3 credits) is strongly recommended during the basic studies, as it gives a good basic knowledge of the language for everyday life and also provides a brief introduction to the Finnish culture.

The structure of studies

The total extent of the Programme is 120 credit points, of which 90 credits is composed of course work and 30 credits of the master degree thesis (final project). Each credit represents the average workload of 27 hours including lectures, assignments, home work, and an examination.

The Master's Degree is comprised of the following degree modules:

  • Basic and common studies, 20 cr
  • Major subject, 36-45 cr
  • Minor subject, 25-30 cr
  • Elective studies, 0-30 cr
  • Master's thesis, 30 cr

Total 120 credits

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

Educational qualifications

The applicant must have a 3 - 4 year bachelor's degree

  • in biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, information technology,physics, or biomechanics for the following majors: Medical Informatics, Medical Instrumentation and Medical Physics, or
  • in biomaterial science, material science, tissue engineering or polymer chemistry for the Biomaterials major

A BSc degree from a Finnish Polytechnic is not a qualification for this programme.

Language skills

The official language of the Programme is English. Therefore, a good command of the English language is an absolute prerequisite.

One of the following language tests is required:

  • TOEFL (score 550/213/79 or higher)
  • IELTS (score 6.0 or higher)
  • Cambridge Language Certificate (Proficiency CPE or Advanced CAE) (grade "C" or higher)

All score reports must be sent to Tampere University of Technology directly from the testing centre. The TOEFL code of Tampere University of Technology is 0599. TUT has no institutional code for other language tests.

Officially certified copy of the test score report can be sent, but in this case the original test score report must be presented when applicant is enrolling to TUT.

Please notice that any other language certificate or free-form statement can not be accepted.
