The International Master’s Degree Programme in Information Technology offers an international study environment for the enrolled students and prepares them for most flexible career opportunities, whereby mastering the English language is a standard requirement.

The information technology studies equip students with basic abilities in scientific work in the field and with the general ability to perform the tasks of an IT engineer. The profession includes the design, implementation and technical applications of systems based on data processing, automation and data transmission, without excluding abilities to work as a researcher, teacher or manager. In addition, students can utilise their information technology knowledge in other branches of engineering.

The International Master's Degree Programme is available for all Finnish and international students, who have completed a B.Sc. degree in a field related to the discipline. The programme includes eight alternative areas of specialisation:

  • Navigation and Positioning
  • Signal Processing
  • Software Systems

The two-year programme leads to the degree of Master of Science in Technology, which provides the general qualification to apply for doctoral degree programmes.

COMPETITIVE DEGREE OF HIGH INTERNATIONAL STANDARD

The International Master’s Degree Programme in Information Technology provides the professional skills and facilities for demanding expert, development and management tasks. The programme also prepares students for the role of an expert in society’s dealings with phenomena and problems related to their own technological field. In the International Master’s Degree Programme, students achieve good language, communication and cooperation skills, as well as abilities for operating in a multidisciplinary and international community. In accordance with the programme’s fundamental task, students attain the prerequisites for scientific postgraduate (doctoral) education. Students learn to understand the nature of scientific knowledge and to analytically and critically evaluate information and apply scientific methods.

EXCELLENT CAREER PROSPECTS

Students who graduate from the International Master’s Degree Programme in Information Technology gain excellent prerequisites for developing and applying information technology as well as for managing comprehensive entities in many areas of technology and society. Graduated Masters of Science typically find employment in research, design, development, production and operating tasks, or commercial and administrative tasks in the field.
There is an increasing demand for ICT personnel in the fields of service production and manufacture, as well as in the telecommunications sector. New employees are needed in research and product development, customer service and customer relations, project leadership and management, technical tasks, design, and sales and marketing. An increasing number of ICT experts are also required in other fields, as the importance of information technology continues to grow and its applications become more numerous. There will be a growing demand for international experts in the globalising markets of industry and services. Furthermore, cross-disciplinary competence is highly appreciated in the field.


Contents

The total scope of the International Master's Degree Programme in Information Technology is 120 credits, of which 90 credits (three semesters) are composed of course work and 30 credits (one semester) of the Master’s thesis. Each credit represents the average workload of 27 hours including lectures, assignments, home work and examinations.

The degree comprises three study blocks, the graduate thesis, and elective studies. All study blocks include both mandatory and optional courses.

Basic and common studies, 15 credits

Basic and common studies aim at offering the students a common ground in their studies and orienting them towards the other degree modules that concentrate on more specialised professional skills. Basic and common studies are common to all students in the International Master's Degree Programme in Information Technology.

Basic module in Information Technology, 25 credits

This module offers the student extensive knowledge of different areas of information technology and qualifies the student for advanced studies. Some studies within this module are selected from a field related to the major subject. The module is common to all students in the International Master's Degree Programme in Information Technology.

Advanced module (Major subject) in the area of specialisation, 30 credits

Students complete an advanced module in the area of specialisation to which they were originally admitted. The advanced study module will constitute the major subject in the Master’s degree, and the graduate thesis shall deal with this area.

Prerequisite and/or elective studies, max. 20 credits

The student may freely choose these studies from the curriculum.

Master's thesis, 30 credits

TOTAL scope of the degree: 120 credits

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

The applicant must have a 3- or 4-year Bachelor of Science degree from an internationally recognised university, which has to be listed in the latest edition of the International Handbook of Universities. The B.Sc. degree should be in the field of computing, information technology, electrical engineering, computer science or another discipline related to the programme, entailing proficiency in mathematics, physics and computer science. It is an advantage if the overall grade (CGPA) of the degree is at least 70% of the highest possible score. .

LANGUAGE SKILLS

The official language of the Programme is English. Therefore, a good command in the English language is an absolute prerequisite, which must be demonstrated with one of the following language tests:

TOEFL (min. score 79 in the web-based iBT or 550 in the paper-based test PBT). Please note that we don’t accept the institutional TOEFL test ITP for this application.
IELTS (score 6.0 or higher)
Cambridge Language Certificate (Proficiency CPE or Advanced CAE) (grade "C" or higher)

All score reports must be sent to TUT directly from the testing centre. The TOEFL code of Tampere University of Technology is 0599. TUT has no institutional code for the other language tests.

Please note that any other language certificates or free-form statements cannot be accepted as proof of the applicant's language skills.
