Today, intercultural issues have a vital role in all sectors of the job market. The ever-increasing movement of people is creating a growing need for knowledge and appreciation of the effect culture has on everyday communication and encounters. In any given field, cultural awareness has become an essential part of being a true professional. To address this need, the University of Helsinki established its first ever Master’s Programme in 2001. In 2009, the Master’s Programme in Intercultural Encounters (ICE) is arranged entirely in English. We invite international students to join our motivated and creative think tank of scholars!
Consisting of four major fields of study, the Master’s Programme in Intercultural Encounters offers a truly multidisciplinary approach to intercultural issues. This generates an appreciation of the multifaceted nature of intercultural contact.
Study of Religions provides students with means to understanding the various roles religion plays in society, in political debate as well as in peoples’ everyday lives.
Social Psychology examines the processes behind the formation of cultural and social identity. Topics of interest include the relationships between various social groups, identity, minorities and majorities, ethnicity, stereotypes, racism, and adaptation.
Speech Communication observes practical intercultural communication situations and processes, as well as cultural beliefs and values present and produced in communication and social relationships.
Latin American Studies and other area studies offered by the Area and Cultural Studies in Department of World Cultures , provide students with the regional, cultural and socio-political contexts in which – and through which – to approach intercultural encounters. The Master’s Programme in Intercultural Encounters offers courses founded on the latest academic research, which enables students to apply their theoretical grasp to practical situations.
The Master's Programme in Intercultural Encounters (120 cr) examines micro- and macro-level interaction in international and multicultural contexts. The programme draws on four different fields of study as major subjects to analyze key questions and concepts from an interdisciplinary perspective. We aim to provide our students with the knowledge and skills necessary for both national and international careers in which intercultural issues are central.
The Finnish-language equivalent of the Master's Programme in Intercultural Encounters (Kulttuurienvälisen vuorovaikutuksen maisteriohjelma) was the first Master's Programme at the University of Helsinki. This programme is made up of four majors (Latin American Studies, Comparative Religion, Social Psychology and Speech Communication) from three different faculties (Arts, Social Sciences and Behavioral Sciences). The programme is based at the Renvall Institute for Area and Cultural Studies.
In addition to the 120-credit Master's degree, we also offer a Minor module of 25 credits.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Finnish Universities are accredited by the law. Universities are responsible for the quality and continuous development of their education and other operations. Legislation also requires them to regularly perform external evaluations of their operations and quality systems and to publish the results of such evaluations. Finnish HEIs decide on their own quality systems, and the comprehensiveness, functioning and effectiveness of the systems are evaluated in the audits, which are valid for six years.
This year, the University of Helsinki is giving over 50 start-up grants to qualified students who have been accepted to study in an International Master's Degree Programme (IMDP). The application for the grant was sent to all admitted IMDP students with the letter of acceptance. The amount of each grant being 1500 euro, they are not meant to cover all your living expenses, but we hope that the little extra money will help you to settle in Helsinki.
The Vice-Rector of the University of Helsinki announces the grantees in a ceremony in late September while the money will be transferred to the grantees in early November.
