Location of University of Helsinki

The goal of the ATCM programme is to provide art research students with business studies and students with a background of business studies knowledge and skills of art studies. The focus is equally on the art and business studies. The combination of art and marketing and management education in a master’s level programme is unique and the current wide cultural field of working life requires this expertise. The ATCM degree qualifies a student for postgraduate (PhD) studies in the major subject, and within both areas of these fields new research is indispensable. The programme also considers some national and international art policy.

Depending on their background studies, students enter the ATCM programme from both partner universities and study at both institutions. At the Aalto University School of Economics, the ATCM programme is a minor studies in the MSc programme in Marketing at the Department of Marketing and Management. The major topics cover a wide range of courses in marketing, management and international business.

After obligatory studies, students choose their elective studies from a variety of optional courses in either university. Students continue to deepen their advanced theoretical art and criticism studies or study for example law and copyrights of arts and European art policy or at the Aalto University School of Economics gain knowledge on marketing, management and international business.

Departments involved
At the University of Helsinki, the major fields of study are Aesthetics, Comparative Literature and Theatre Research at the Department of Philosophy, History, Culture and Art Studies within the Faculty of Arts. Studies can be also made in Film and Television Research, and Semiotics.


Contents

Degree
At the University of Helsinki, the students complete the Master of Arts (MA in Arts).

At the Aalto University School of Economics, the students complete the Master of Economic Sciences (MSc).

At the University of Helsinki, the awarded degree is part of the university sector of Finnish higher education and is in accordance with the Finnish Universities Act (645/1997, 556/2005).

At the University of Helsinki, the ATCM programme consists of 120 (ECTS) credits, of which 80 (ECTS) are for advanced studies and 40 (ECTS) for a Master’s thesis. The students have 58 ECTS of obligatory studies and a minimum of 22 ECTS of optional studies.

First year
At the beginning of the term, there will be intensive days at both universities introducing the system of the programme, and students will confirm their personal study plan (PSP). During the first year of the programme, the students focus on the obligatory advanced studies which are organised by both institutions. The seminar will begin at the end of the first year, in the fourth study period. The ATCM programme students have their own seminar group lead by the head of the programme.

The second year
The students will focus on the optional advanced studies they have chosen. They will continue to deepen their knowledge of their main subject and will choose the optional studies that will underpin their Seminar work and Master’s Thesis. At the end of the fourth semester, the focus will be on the completion of the Master’s Thesis.

The students at the University of Helsinki, the Working Life Practice would ideally be taken during the summer between studies or later if it supports the theme of the Master’s Thesis

Requirements

At the University of Helsinki, the Master's degree programme in Art Theory, Criticism and Management (ATCM) is open to applicants who have completed:

* A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent degree in Finland or abroad. To enhance your chances to qualify, your Bachelor’s degree should be inaesthetics, comparative literature or theatre research.

OR

* A Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification, with sufficient basis in theoretical art studies with a minimum of 60 credits (ECTS).

AND

* who can indicate proficiency in academic English

The maximum of 30 credits (ECTS) of supplementary studies can be required of the student accepted to ATCM. These supplementary studies are not included in the ATCM degree requirements.

Students who have the background with economic studies apply through the Aalto University School of Economics:

1) The ATCM in Aalto Universitiy is only open for students already accepted for a master’s program in Aalto University School of Economics. The application for masters program is next opened in spring 2012:
