Location of The University of Edinburgh

This is a degree, offered jointly between the University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt University, that provides an intensive training in the mathematical ideas and tools vital to the finance industry. The University of Edinburgh has long experience in stochastic analysis in the School of Mathematics whilst Heriot-Watt University has a tradition of association with the insurance and finance industry through its Department of Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics and the School of Management and Languages. The MSc in Financial Mathematics combines their different branches of expertise. The course is part of the Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences, the joint research institute of mathematical sciences at the University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt University.

The advantage of the course is its unique combination of subjects covered. These range from the Financial Markets module which leaves students equipped to deal with day-to-day practical issues in finance, through to theoretical mathematics modules, which are essential for a career dealing with the pricing of complex financial derivative contracts.

Lectures and tutorials are held in Scotland's capital city, which is a great place to live with its unmatched selection of cultural activities. In addition, as a financial centre, Edinburgh is second only to London in the UK and boasts a long tradition of association with life insurance companies. It is the second biggest centre in Europe for equity investment management and is home to the Faculty of Actuaries.

Requirements

The course is an advanced degree in the mathematical sciences. It is essential to have achieved, or be expected to attain, at least the equivalent of a UK upper second-class degree in your undergraduate degree, which must be in mathematics or a very substantially mathematical subject (for example statistics, physics or engineering).

Degrees in Business, Management, Economics or Finance are unlikely to meet this entry requirement. In particular, degrees in these subjects which include only standard courses in mathematics and statistics for management school students are not sufficient.

(As an alternative the University runs an MSc in Finance. This degree has different entry requirements and does not require a good first degree in mathematics.)

To apply for a place on the course, simply fill in the university's online application form.

You should include, with your application, an academic transcript, showing all the courses you have taken and your grades in them. If your mathematical background is not complete then we will be providing background reading lists for the preceding summer vacation.

For students who do not have a first degree in the mathematical sciences or with a high maths content, we offer the opportunity to get on to the MSc by taking the . Graduate Certificate in Mathematical Sciences
