The aims of the programme are:
- to provide a broadly-based, scientifically-oriented foundation in the interdisciplinary area of music, acoustics and audio technology;
- to develop skills in research, computation, design, and analytical problem solving;
- to create a multi-disciplinary learning environment that will prepare the student for careers in which a strong understanding of music/audio technology is required;
- to develop an ability to appreciate, understand and develop the creative potential of sound design.
The emphasis of this programme is on science and technology in the context of musical and multimedia applications.
Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete this cross-disciplinary programme will develop skills in the area of music, acoustics and audio technology. Graduates will have a thorough understanding of the appropriate technologies and the science underlying them, as well as an understanding of their role in a wider creative arts environment.
The MSc is a 12-month full-time programme, taught by a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, and practical work. Courses are assessed through a combination of report submissions and written examinations. In the final three months each student carries out an individual project, which is assessed by submission of a dissertation.

Minimum 2:2 honours degree in a science-, electronic- or music-related subject. Other degree subjects and non-standard qualifications may also be acceptable if combined with appropriate professional experience.
Applicants should normally have at least an upper-second class honours degree, or an undergraduate degree at an equivalent level, in the social or natural sciences, or a cognate discipline. Applications will also be considered from people with relevant professional experience.
