The UNIGIS Master's of Science (MSc) programme provides an understanding of the conceptual, technical, and organisational aspects of Geographic Information Science (GISc). It facilitates career advancement through a postgraduate academic degree. Targeting working professionals, this programme will graduate students qualified as a project, team or department leaders. UNIGIS is based at the well known GI Centre of Excellence at Salzburg University (Z_GIS), connected to a global network of partner institutions.
As the UNIGIS MSc(GISc) is an in-service, online, distance learning, postgraduate programme leading to an internationally recognized academic degree, course design follows the idea of blended learning. The programme is designed for flexible forms of learning including personalized and open forms of study with an emphasis on student-centred active learning, allowing curricular and organisational diversity. Learning strategies include activities such as individual processing of a variety of materials and on-line tutorials, self-assessed exercises and quizzes, hands-on assignments, use of various state-of-the-art software products, collaborative discussions, and projects.
The programme is designed to be completed in a minimum of two years with a weekly workload of at least 12 -15 hours.
Upon completion of all course requirements the academic degree Master of Science (Geographic Information Science & Systems) - MSc(GIS) will be awarded by Salzburg University.
The course is based on a modular structure including compulsory modules, elective subjects, a major collaborative project and optional attendance of short intensive courses (summer schools). 120 European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) points are awarded for all the coursework based on the ECTS points scheme as defined by the curriculum.
Nine compulsory modules (54 ECTS) cover foundations of GISc including the following topics: acquisition, modelling, and visualisation of geodata; geostatistical and spatial data analysis; geoDBMS; GIS organisation and project management; and OpenGIS and distributed GI Infrastructure. Elective modules (a total of 20 ECTS required) like Remote Sensing, Photogrammetry, Advanced Spatial Databases, various application areas or EuroGIS tailor the programme to the needs of individual students. International summer schools or workshops and a collaborative project contribute to students´ personal and professional development and enhance communication. Successful completion of a Masters thesis (30 ECTS) is required to graduate.

A minimum of a Bachelor Degree or equivalent awarded by a recognised academic institution in Austria or abroad is required for entry.
The courses are taught and assessed in English or German. If English or German is not your native language you may be required to show the evidence of proficiency. Students will be required to have computer skills at intermediate level, i.e. in using the Internet, communication software, word processors, and spreadsheets.
