Systems Design is a new Master Degree program in engineering focusing on the design and implementation of complex systems. Systems Design graduates are able to understand, develop, and modify complex technical systems in the fields of electronics and mechatronics.

Course InformationStudents acquire detailed knowledge of mathematics, informatics, technological physics, control systems, numeric processes, circuit design, robotics and systems theory.

These qualifications allow graduates to take up leading positions in research and development in a variety of fields.

Specialist AreasStudents can choose from five specialist areas to focus on after their first semester:

* Embedded Systems
* Remote Systems
* Sensor Systems
* Control Systems
* Mechatronic Systems

In the academic year 2011/12, the following specialist areas will be offered: Remote Systems, Mechatronic Systems, Embedded Systems, and Control Systems

The first semester is followed by two semesters of courses that are specific to the chosen field of specialization (see module overview). In the fourth semester the Master thesis will be written in conjunction with a work placement. On completing the final examination, after four semesters, students are awarded the Master of Science in Engineering, MSc.

Contents

Embedded Systems Embedded systems are electronic systems integrated (embedded) in systems that are controlled or monitored. They consist of a combination of hardware (micro-controller, signal processor, ASIC…) and software (program control and communications control).

They often contain interfaces to their environment, which fulfill the tasks of sensors and actuators. Embedded systems constitute an integral part of communications devices, vehicles, medical technology, and machinery and industrial plants.

Remote Systems Advanced technological solutions are characterized in particular by the world wide use of hardware and software. This has meant that it is necessary to make the common use, organization and technical implementation of equipment, machinery and software tools possible, as well as their operation and service.

Remote systems deal with the design and implementation of virtual and remote work environments. In the field of engineering and in other fields such as informatics and business economics this has become one of the fundamental areas of development.

Sensor Systems The rapid development and use of automated systems in e.g. industries, automotive or environment areas requires also the development of sensor systems, based on different physical, chemical and other principles. Microelectronics, micromechanics, integrated optics and other related high technologies enable the miniaturization of sensor elements, as well as the physical integration of various functions and signal-processing elements. Modern smart sensors systems are used in different networks, which are a major part of the future internet of things.

Carinthia University of Applied Sciences offers this specialization together with the Carinthia Tech Research Company.

Control Systems Control systems play a pivotal role in technical systems. Analytical system implementation is therefore of key importance in both the analysis of existing systems and in the conceptualization of new complex systems.

The ability to control dynamic systems requires knowledge of the entire process, ranging from design to the testing and implementation of control systems. Graduates find employment prospects with any company involved in the design of new complex technical systems or finding solutions for control system tasks for high-tech product development.

Mechatronic Systems Mechatronics combines the fields of mechanical engineering, electrotechnology/electronics and IT. Today it is no longer possible to separate these three interrelated fields.

The modern engineer must be able to understand and design complete technical systems and the individual components in these systems. Only then can the engineer effectively transform development potential into technological and economic progress.
