The use of parallel supercomputers and networks is becoming increasingly important in science and commerce. The aim of the MSc in High Performance Computing (HPC) is to train professional practitioners in HPC who can play their part in the development of new technology throughout their careers.
The MSc in HPC is offered by the Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre (EPCC), an institute within the School of Physics. EPCC has an international reputation as a world-leading centre of expertise in HPC, parallel computing and the Grid. It operates some of the world´s most powerful supercomputers and is one of only two national centres for HPC training in the UK.
Upon completion of the programme, students should be able to:
* understand and use the major techniques for programming parallel supercomputers and be able to apply them to real world HPC applications;
* adopt a professional approach and apply good practice to major software development projects in a variety of programming languages;
* embark upon further research in areas of science that use leading-edge computing;
* develop and maintain the professional standards, skills and knowledge expected from HPC practitioners.
The programme has a strong practical focus and combines lectures with tutored practical sessions and small group tutorials to reinforce key points. These are backed up by extended programming exercises, written reports and research projects
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

The annual closing date for applications is the end of January for non-UK/EU nationals and the end of February for UK/EU nationals. Applications made after these dates may also be considered, depending on the availability of places.
The entrance requirement is a good honours degree or equivalent work experience. No prior HPC knowledge is assumed, but candidates must be competent programmers in Java, C++, C or Fortran.
