This programme provides in-depth training in the tools and technologies of post-genomic science and their application to biomedical research. There is a particular focus on using the outputs from functional genomic technologies for the analysis and modelling of biological pathways, networks and systems. To reflect the rapid developments in this new era of integrative biology, the programme fosters an interdisciplinary approach with inputs from bioinformatic, computational and biophysical sciences. A key feature is the application of genomic and proteomic technologies and 'biochip' readouts for the definition of disease-related pathways in biomedical and clinical research projects.

The MSc equips students for further independent research in this field, and for research careers in academia and industry. Graduates will gain excellent research and analytical skills applicable to a wide range of disciplines across the biomedical, clinical and biopharmaceutical research spectrum.

Learning Outcomes

Students who successfully complete this programme of study will be able to demonstrate:

* understanding of the challenges and potential of the post-genomic era;
* appreciation of existing and emerging platforms and analytical approaches required for high throughput and functional analysis of biological systems;
* understanding of the critical requirement for the fusion of biology, technology, bioinformatics/statistics and computational science in modern genomics and the exploitation of HTS biological data;
* investigation of post-genomic biology as an information science; and its inexorable move to systems-level understanding;
* appreciation of the utility and potential of data mining, pathway mapping and systems-level analytical techniques for the discovery of biological pathways;
* skills in the integration of post-genomic sciences in biomedical and clinical research strategies;
* application of above to specific biosystems research in health and disease.

Contents

Assessment is on the basis of research project work utilising leading-edge genomic and proteomic technologies incorporating methods for the production of biological pathways and networks applicable to disease systems. In order to provide a taught framework to complement the research activities, there is an extensive series of lectures, research seminars and laboratory demonstrations provided by leading experts in post-genomic science from academia and industry.
