The degree is approved as part of the training programme in paediatric dentistry by the SAC in Paediatric Dentistry for those in possession of a training number awarded by the Postgraduate Dental Dean for Scotland.
This programme aims to provide paediatric dentists with the knowledge and skills to provide high-quality care. It is designed to enhance knowledge, diagnostic and clinical skills, while encouraging reflective thought.
It is a course with a large clinical component, but which puts a significant emphasis on research training. The syllabus includes the following topics:
relevant anatomy, physiology and pathology;
* growth and development;
* oral microbiology;
* comprehensive diagnosis and treatment planning;
* prevention of oro-dental diseases;
* pathogenesis of oro-dental diseases;
* manifestations of systematic disorders;
* developmental disorders of the teeth, mouth, and jaws;
* radiology.
Learning is by taught seminars and private study. This is also linked to clinical practice with an emphasis on reflective learning.
The degree course begins with an introductory period of core topics. Following this is an introductory period in the laboratory to familiarise students with the facilities and the basics of wire-bending skills, appliance design and appliance construction and mechanics.
This is followed by five structured terms of theoretical seminars and tutorials. Diagnostic tests are carried out on a regular basis. Clinical care of patients is established early within the first term. There are written examinations at the end of each term. Postgraduates will be required to complete a supervised research dissertation of between 15,000 - 20,000 words in the subject area of Paediatric Dentistry.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
