We invite you to take a look at our international Bachelor and Master programmes. These courses of study are offered by our eight well equipped teaching chairs which provide excellent tuition in Chemical and Bioengineering. You also have the opportunity to undertake cutting edge research in engineering.
Specialisation directions:
* Applied Chemistry,
* Biotechnology,
* Process technology and product design,
* Thermofluid dynamics
Chemical and Bioengineering is the engineering discipline which deals with the conversion of substances through chemical, physical and biological processes. The corresponding industry represents a significant economical factor: approximately 40% of the industrial turnover of Germany originates in processing industries and 15% of the entire world production can be attributed to the chemical industry.
Through continuing optimization of existing processes and the application of new processes chemical and bioengineers work to improve product characteristics and to reduce the number and quantity of unwanted by-products and waste. As the link person between chemistry and plant construction one of the main tasks of chemical and bioengineers is the implementation on a production scale of processes for material conversion developed on the laboratory scale, often by chemists and biologists. For this purpose they need knowledge in the areas of chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics and the engineering sciences.
Thanks to their broadly based education, chemical and bioengineers are represented not only in the chemical industry but in many other important associated industries. The spectrum ranges from the oil industry through the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, the food processing and beverages industries and plant construction to the automotive industry, energy engineering and the environmental protection sector. Chemical and bioengineers undertake a wide variety of highly responsible jobs in the fields of research and development; production; plant design, construction and operation; marketing; customer service and management. They are employed in major industrial corporations, small and medium-sized enterprises and state authorisation and monitoring organisations.
The course of studies in Chemical and Bioengineering is built up of modules. On the one hand there is a choice between the Diplom degree and the Bachelor and Master degrees.
On the other hand numerous choices are offered within the course itself. The Bachelor course is broadly based to provide the necessary fundamental knowledge and to facilitate the route towards increasingly important synergies. In the Master course students choose one out of four specialisation directions. Additional options are available in the selection of elective and supplementary subjects.
For the Bachelor and the Master thesis the student works together with researchers in one of the chairs of the department and so can specialise according to his personal interest.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testPlease test yourself by checking the following prerequisites. If you cannot answer positively to all the questions, please do not apply because your application will unfortunately have no chance of success.
Are you able to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing? Have you taken and passed the TOEFL or GRE test?
Do you have sufficient ability in German to understand lectures in that language? If not, are you going to study German before coming to Erlangen and to continue learning the language intensively during your MSc studies?
Have you completed or nearly completed an undergraduate course in chemical engineering with excellent results or top marks and of at least four years duration leading to the degree BSc/BEng/BTech or equivalent? If you have studied a closely related course, e.g. mechanical engineering with emphasis on process engineering, would you be prepared to take extra courses e.g. physical and organic chemistry, reaction engineering, separation processes?
For Indian applicants only: Have you already taken or have you registered for the GATE test? If your score is not already known but you are otherwise qualified to apply, you should submit your pre-application and send the GATE score immediately after release on 31st March.
Will you be able to finance your living costs in Germany for the full duration of your studies? For MSc programmes, the DAAD offers scholarships only in a few countries and scholarships from the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg are rarely available. Only limited earnings during your studies will be possible.
Can you submit your pre-application before the deadline, 30th April?
You can contact L. Depmeier to ask a question about Chemical and Bioengineering at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (Erlangen Campus).
Using the form on this page, you can directly ask questions to the contactpersons at the university.
Fill out your contact information and message. The information you fill out in this form will be sent directly to the university. They will reply to you on the e-mail address you provide here.
Explain your academic background in the message; the more sophisticated your e-mail, the better the answer.
