This programe, in collaboration with Uppsala University, focuses on the biological and chemical processes behind the aetiology, epidemiology and evolution of microbial infections, as well as ways of predicting, preventing, tracking and treating infectious diseases. There is a growing demand for expertise in this field, particularly in the developing world, where microbial infections are more prevalent, often with devastating consequences.

Future Prospects

A broad knowledge of microbial infections is essential for research and development of diagnostic methods, drug development, evolution of resistance, vaccination, emergency planning, food production, diseases specific for developing countries and zoonoses. It is expected that holders of a Master´s degree in infection biology will be engaged in these issues in the private as well as public sector. Possible employers include laboratories, local authorities and humanitarian aid organisations. Graduating students are also well prepared to apply to a PhD programme.

Contents

First year studies concern the world of microbes and aim to give advanced knowledge of the biological and chemical processes regulating host - pathogen interactions. This knowledge will constitute the basis for more applied topics such as the biology of infectious diseases, how to control infections by antimicrobial therapies and natural immunity and how to understand microbial evolution.

The education includes lectures, lab training, seminars and project work. All lectures are firmly rooted in current international research and include presentations on ongoing research at the departments as well as by guest scientists. Practical lab exercises are integral and compulsory elements in the first year sub-courses. They relate to ongoing research projects and may even be designed to elucidate questions to which the answers have not yet been found. Some lab work will be performed side by side with graduate students in the research laboratory.

The degree project during the fourth semester is carried out in the field of infection biology in Sweden or abroad. To encourage an international approach, students will receive support in establishing contact with suitable research teams abroad.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
