The protection, curation and promotion of cultural heritage, including what is sometimes called the `historic environment´, is an undertaking in which different government funded agencies and institutions combine efforts with non-governmental organizations and local communities. Nowadays cultural heritage is implicated in many fields of activity, including economic and regional regeneration, tourism, education, the acquisition of skills and the enhancement of social identity.
Cultural heritage is considered to make an important contribution to national economies. In Wales, for example, figures published in 2008 on the `historic environment´ estimate an economic impact of between £460m and £780m, supporting around 15,500 to 22,500 jobs.
The term `heritage´ is connective in that it links people in the present with what they have inherited from people in the past. Attempts to calculate the historic environment´s economic impact indicate that its presentation to the public takes place in a complex set of social relations. Surveys undertaken at heritage sites indicate that there is strong agreement that the care of such attractions is important to visitors.
The Diploma/MA in Cultural Heritage offered by the School of Archaeology, History and Anthropology has been developed from a Postgraduate Diploma in Cultural Heritage Management which was introduced in autumn 2001. The planning of the original Diploma was made possible with support from the European Social Fund.
The MA in Cultural Heritage is designed to respond to the needs of students and to build on the department´s experience of collaborating with museums, libraries and archives in Wales. It includes a work placement in order to enable students to gain practical training and to permit them to work to professional standards. Organizations with which the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology has collaborated include Cambria Archaeology, Carmarthenshire Museums, National Museum Wales, National Trust and the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales
Students are also encouraged to work with resources in the University of Wales, Lampeter. One of the most popular and attractive elements of the course is the organization of an exhibition and catalogue that students devise using the historic collections in the Lampeter´s Founders´ Library, which houses the University´s oldest printed books (1470-1850) and manuscripts. These collections have been rehoused in the purpose built Roderic Bowen Library which is being opened in 2008.
The acquisition of skills in the workplace is accompanied by a theoretically informed underpinning including a consideration of how to present an ethical representation of heritage. The course is intended to enable students to understand the heritage of Wales and of other parts of the world, such as Australia, Oceania, Latin America and the Mediterranean.
Students have come to us from different disciplinary backgrounds with a relevant first degree (for example Anthropology, Archaeology, Art History, Classics, English, Film and Media, Heritage, History and Philosophy). After completing the course, they have taken up careers in organisations including museums, archives and the National Trust. Hence the course is intended for students who wish to enter employment in specialised fields in heritage, or to work in situations related to public archaeology. M.A. candidates undertake a research dissertation component.
The successful completion of this course will prepare students with important practical and theoretical knowledge either for work in heritage related contexts or to proceed to research degrees.
