This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of anthropological issues concerned with death and mourning. It also permits students to explore different aspects of death rituals and of representations concerning death and mourning. Examples are drawn from societies in the present and of the past.
Death rituals and remembrance of the dead allow survivors to deal with the loss and disruption caused by the death of a person. The study of these rituals provides an opportunity to examine concepts such as rebirth and to investigate how the soul has been represented in different social contexts.
Key features of the course: * Students gain the ability to analyse problems in a multi-dimensional manner
* Students develop empathy and imaginative insights
* For residential students there are field trips to war memorials in west Wales
* The course presents students with the opportunity to develop independent research
Career opportunities: * Employee in various NGOs and development organisations

* Higher research or teacher
Students are guided through current theoretical debates within Social Anthropology, enabling them to evaluate the contribution of theories concerning death and mourning in a holistic social context.
The course equips students with a sound basis in essential practical knowledge and expertise in ethnography, so that they can critically evaluate anthropological methodologies and prepare and carry out their own practical investigation in death studies.
Students are also encouraged to consider interpretations from cognate disciplines, such as Archaeology, Art History and Religious Studies, in order to enrich their application of anthropological knowledge to contemporary issues relevant to death studies. MA candidates undertake a research dissertation component.
The module entitled `Ritual and Representation in Death and Mourning´ is compulsory for residential students. It includes field visits to war memorials in west Wales.
