This programme provides a coherent programme of musicological and practical study as well as a solid basis in musicological techniques and methods. It entails a detailed study of the history, repertory, performing techniques and teaching principles of the instrument or voice chosen for the concluding recital component.
To reflect the new emerging synergies between members of staff at the School of Music, students on the MMus Performance will be able to include composition as part of their module choice. Those students who wish to embrace outlooks from other sub-disciplines at the School may choose MA modules for part of their studies.
You take five modules in Stage 1 which, once successfully completed, is followed by a public Recital in Stage 2. For the pattern of part-time study in Stage 1, please consult the School.
Stage 1
* MA Research Skills (core)
* Organology and Technique (core)
* Performance I: Closed Recital (core)
* Repertory (core)
* Performance Practice

* Historical Performance
Stage 2
* Performance 2 Public Recital (normally presented in mid-September [tuition between October and September], 60 credits) involves the presentation of a public recital of approximately one hour's duration (including a set-piece), a performance portfolio (including programme notes and a diary of participation in the School's concerts) and a via-voce examination.
Special Features:
* Teaching is by tutorials, seminars and instrumental/vocal lessons.
* 40 hours of vocal/instrumental tuition per student.
* Opportunities for performance in a variety of ensembles, instrumental/vocal workshops and master-classes.
Available Modules:
Study Skills: This module, shared with students taking the MMus Composition, covers inputting music notation and editing to professional standard using Sibelius software. Students will also be introduced to relevant aspects of Music Library IT.
Organology and Technique: Provides an opportunity to work with a selected tutor in investigating the history and development of the instrument (or voice) chosen for the recital component of the programme and the evolution of its performance techniques and teaching principles.
Performance I: Closed Recital: This module aims to cultivate the ability to demonstrate in performance both proficiency of technique and an understanding of appropriate aspects of style and interpretation applicable to a range of music. For the Closed Recital, students will present a programme of works of not more than 30 minutes duration chosen by the student and approved by the Programme Director.
Repertory: Provides the necessary guidance and supervision to enable students to survey in borad overview the repertory of the instrument (or voice) chosen for the programme’s recital component and to examine in detail four specific areas of that repertory in their cultural contexts.
Performance Practice: An examination of the ways in which music is and has been performed and how to prepare historically informed interpretations.
