The overall aim of this programme is to provide registered nurses and midwives with the opportunity to enhance previously acquired professional education and develop critical inquiry, evidence based practice/research, knowledge, skills, and attitudes in preparation for professional role enhancement within nursing/midwifery.
Successful completion of the Graduate Diploma/MSc. Nursing/Midwifery programme will provide students with the academic qualifications necessary to enhance their professional role in the healthcare environment. The programme will provide opportunities to explore research in order to further develop evidence based nursing and midwifery practice.
On completion of the programme the student will be able to:
* Critically evaluate, conduct and generate research in nursing/midwifery practice.
* Critically review current innovations and developments within nursing/midwifery.
* Critically appraise strategies that promote, maintain and restore health across a wide spectrum of care groups.
* Critically evaluate developments in healthcare informatics from a national and international perspective.
* Discuss factors that influence theoretical and practical knowledge and critical thinking skills.
* Critically discuss the principles of primary and community healthcare delivery.
* Critically discuss the meanings and paradigm challenges of caring as a creative enterprise in nursing/midwifery practice.
* Critically discuss strategies to empower nurses/midwives in leading and managing developments in nursing/midwifery practice within an interdisciplinary team approach.
* Critically appraise and analyse evidence based findings and their implementation in enhancing clinical effectiveness.
* Apply a critical understanding of reflective processes in realising a professional vision for practice.
Contents
At Graduate Diploma level, students undertake a total of 8 modules listed below. There are 6 core modules and students are required to choose one elective from semesters 1 and one elective from Semester 2.
At Masters level, all students will complete one additional research module and a dissertation.
Semester 1 - Health Research - Methodology, Principles of Primary and Community Care, Leading and Managing Caring Practice.
Elective Modules: Students will select one Module from the following in Semester 1:
* Healthcare Informatics: Concepts and Developments, Advanced Assessment in Nursing,Contemporary Issues in Midwifery Practice. All Elective Modules may not be offered in any year.
Semester 2 - Healthcare Policy and Reform, Transcultural Care, Evidence Based Practice in Healthcare.
Elective Modules: Students will select one Module from the following in Semester 2:
* Consultancy in Nursing/Midwifery, Complementary Therapies in Healthcare Practice, Therapeutic Interventions and Support in Nursing, Advancing Midwifery Practice. All Elective Modules may not be offered in any year.
Semester 3 - Health Research - Methods, Dissertation 1.
Semester 4 - Dissertation 2.
IELTS
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Applicants should normally possess a Primary Degree and must be a registered Nurse or Midwife on the appropriate register maintained by An Bord Altranais.
Applicants who do not meet the normal academic requirements will also be considered. It is expected that some applicants with substantial clinical and experiential experience as well as professional qualifications will wish to undertake this programme. Policies and procedures are in place in the Department of Nursing and Midwifery to support the recognition and accreditation of prior learning (RPL) - (including formal education and experiential learning) and will be applied to relevant applicants. These candidates will be required to submit a written assignment and may be required to attend for interview.
The Graduate Diploma will be offered over one year. The MSc. programme will be offered over a subsequent year (minimum). Entry to the MSc programme will be based on achieving a minimum 2.1 honours standard on the Graduate Diploma (Minimum QCA of 3.00 - with discretion of 0.1)
ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
As all international students are required to possess sufficient language skills to attend lectures and sit examinations at the University of Limerick, students should be competent to communicate through the medium of English prior to their arrival. Students must have a minimum score of 550 (paper based) or 213(computer based) in TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score in the range of 6.5-7 and not less than 6.0 in any one component.
