The aim of this programme is to offer graduates working in the construction industry the opportunity to develop project-management skills in the context of large-scale contemporary architectural projects. The course will suit those professionals who have a construction-project background and want to learn more about design aspects, or those who have a design background who wish to gain skills in project management.
Learning Outcomes
Graduates from the programme will be able to understand and apply:
* current theories and practice in project management;
* construction economics;
* finance and risk management;
* human resource management;
* corporate strategy and procurement.
Graduates will also understand the context and factors that inform contemporary architectural design, the influence of sustainability and industrialisation of construction on building design, and contemporary ideas on the development of cities.
The programme is offered through distance learning, allowing a considerable degree of flexibility. As there are no formal classes students can work at a pace to suit their work or personal commitments. It is also possible to take a break in study between modules. The programme can be completed after two years or up to a maximum of five years. It is quite common for students on distance learning programmes to complete the taught components in two years and the dissertation in a further 6 months.
Students receive comprehensive course materials and study packs for each module by post and also available online. Course materials include written guidance on completion of assignments and dissertations. Students are in regular contact with tutors via email .
The total credit weighting for the course is 180, 60 credits from modules offered by Heriot-Watt, 60 credits from modules offered by the University of Edinburgh and 60 credits for a dissertation, supervised by either institution.
Students take 3 distance learning modules offered by the University of Edinburgh and 5 modules from Heriot-Watt University. The different credit weightings reflect the effort hours required by each module. In addition to this, a compulsory dissertation module at the conclusion of the course is to be undertaken.
