Music at Edinburgh has a long history of excellence in composition. This programme aims to support students in their exploration of their musical horizons, their musical language and its relationship to mainstreams and currents in the wider compositional world.
Learning OutcomesStudents who successfully complete the Masters degree will:
* develop an understanding of historical and contemporary trends in music;
* develop their own practice and aesthetic;
* gain a secure understanding of the context of their work;
* have a professional approach to the presentation of performing materials and the management of the relationship with performers.
This programme allows students to explore their compositional language and horizons in relationship to contemporary compositional styles and challenges. Subsidiary courses in Orchestration or Music in the Community, and options in a wide variety of compositional, technical or historical subjects will encourage and help this process.
Three taught or supervised courses are taken over two semesters, making a total of 120 credits. A portfolio of compositions is completed over the remaining four months for a further 60 credits. The structure of the program is as follows (credit weightings are in brackets):
Semester 1
* Composition A (40)
* Orchestration (20)
* or
* Music in the Community (20)
Semester 2
* Composition B (40)
* Negotiated Taught Course (20)
It may be possible or necessary for the 20-credit courses taken in the two semesters to be switched around, depending on availability of tutors in any particular semester.
On successful completion of coursework students proceed to submit a Portfolio of Compositions (60 credits).
